Dear Diary,
Well, I’m all settled into my dorm room, no thanks to Illyce. My parents pulled their classic stop and drop, leaving me on the curb surrounded by bags and boxes, with nary a helping hand in sight. I called Illyce on my cell, but she was running behind, rather than being there already there like she had promised. I should really know better than to trust her to be anywhere on time after all these years. That girl runs on her own time scale.
Fortunately, late roommate or not, I did get some help schlepping everything. I’d just gotten off the phone with Illyce and was saying some pretty uncomplimentary stuff under my breath, when the most gorgeous guy walked up to me. He was tall, lanky, and stunning in a shaggy, long haired, geeky kinda way. And he was offering to help me with my stuff.
Before I could even convince my mouth to respond -- I think my brain must have gotten stuck on the fact that a hot guy had said something to me -- his arms were full of boxes and another guy had appeared to help. I guess they were friends. All I really know is inside of a minute I was leading them up the stairs to my room, and all I had to carry was my purse and my laptop. I’m not complaining. Well, not for the help. If I could have been walking behind them I might have enjoyed the climb up five flights of stairs a bit more. What a view!
They vanished as soon as they dropped my stuff off. I barely got a chance to say thank you, let alone get their names. That I do regret. Hopefully I’ll see them around sometime.

Dear Diary,
I can’t believe it. My handsome savior is in my Freshman English class. The class itself is a waste of time. The syllabus might as well say “you are a complete idiot who shouldn’t be permitted anywhere near a book.” But I think I’ll attend anyway. The lectures will be a waste to listen to, but the eye candy will keep me from getting too bored.

Dear Diary,
I haven’t seen Illyce in two days. Between time spent in class and the time she is spending with her new boyfriend, she has no time for her best friend. I don’t mind too much. It leaves me with more time to do my homework. When she is around, we spend far too much time talking. I just hope she is finding time to keep up on her work.
On another note, we have been told to find a partner for a research paper in Freshman English. I was trying to get the courage together to ask my handsome savior, especially since I don’t really know anyone else in the class. Thankfully, he beat me to it.
His name is Warren.

Dear Diary,
Warren asked me to go with him to the Halloween Ball!
Illyce has reappeared just in time. I’m going to need her advice for my costume. It has to be perfect.
November 2nd
Dear Diary,
The last few days have been the strangest and most wonderful of my life. Where to begin?
The party was wonderful. Warren made a stunning pirate, and he seemed to like my old renfaire costume just fine, though that might have been because the bodice was a bit tight. I could have kept dancing all night, but just before midnight, Warren excused himself, saying he had somewhere he needed to be. I’d like to say I was understanding, but to be honest I was heartbroken. I didn’t whine, but I did follow him when he left the party. I don’t know what was going through my mind, but I had to know if he was meeting someone else. I’ve been obsessed with him for months now. I didn’t want to miss my chance.
Oh, that doesn’t make a lick of sense. All I know is I followed him into the park. I know, a damned fool idea. But I followed him into the woods, and never found my way back.
Oh, I’m back in my dorm and attending classes, but the world does not feel like the one I grew up in. Warren is a werewolf. He was meeting with an entire pack of werewolves who were gathering from across town at midnight. I’m dating a werewolf.
Yes, we are officially together now. He asked me after the meeting, a meeting I watched from a tree outside the clearing. I think they knew I was there the whole time. Warren certainly didn’t have any trouble locating me right after the meeting, even if he did wait until pretty much everyone else was gone.
But that isn’t the point. The point is that the world is not quite as I thought it was. Turns out Illyce’s boyfriend is a vampire. Warren knows him. If there are vampires and werewolves in the world, what else might be lurking out there?
I can’t wait to find out.
