Pirates of the Caribbean - Part of the Crew

Who: William Turner - "Pirates of the Caribbean"
What: A short fic of the events during the end of the third movie. Contains spoilers!

The last thing he feels as the cutlass digs into his heart and twists with painful agony, is the heat rapidly draining from his body. Vision blurring, he doesn't feel her warm hands on his cheeks, but sees her tears dripping from her now colorless face. "Stay with me," the soft voice speaks as though it were miles away and only in a dream, but the laughing of the monstrosity in front is the only distinguishing sound he knows and recognizes.

The moments pass by quickly as he slips in and out of unconsciousness, the cold lingering one inch closer every time he's back into the waking world. He doesn't even feel as a sturdy hand grabs his own and wraps it around a small dagger, those brown eyes of his keep gazing at the beauty in front. And then his eyes close one last time before the love of his life is no longer viewable and a world of darkness envelops him with his last breath of life. Echoes cascade across the empty void and there's distant screaming, but his vision remains dark. As if frozen in eternity for an hourless time, his eyes once again open, but William Turner is not the same man.

His memories remain intact, and he's quite aware of the life he's lived, but now he's been given a mission in the afterlife. Submerged completely underwater with the crew of the Flying Dutchman standing and awaiting orders he feels no pain, no sickness, and no heartbeat. He should haven been afraid when he looked down and notices the scar across his chest, but instead he feels a great responsibility. No need to breathe, and defying the physics of gravity, he stands prepared and orders his men--who no longer appear to be creatures of the sea--to get ready; the battle is not yet finished.

He takes a hold of the wheel, and already educated with the details upon his awakening, the ship lurches forward and out of the watery depths below. His friends, his love, are still up there and in need of assistance as he cannot leave a battle that still continues. He wants to see her again, even touch that soft skin of hers, but among the living and continuing with her life, not in the care of him ferrying her soul to the other side.

As the battle was won and victory was celebrated, he stared to the Pearl and back to the sun that was soon to set. He knew that once the night came, a lonely ten years at sea without his new wife was going to occur, and he'd never set foot on land during those times. She was faithful, he never doubted it, and would be waiting for him when those years at sea would finally come to an end and the curse was lifted.

He could start living again with his beautiful Elizabeth, but for now he had a job to do.
