Slow dance

It was only by chance Dave was at the same graduation party as them. He had kept in touch with Kurt on the regular via email or the occasional Facebook conversation, but mostly he had managed to go things alone now that school was finally over and it was the end of a very miserable era. He had been more than content to close the book on it and move on. It was time for a fresh start now.

But he sat at the table alone nursing a soda, and in the crowd of couples dancing together on the makeshift dance floor, his eyes inevitably sought Kurt and Blaine out. They had their arms wrapped around each other as they moved together slowly to the token love song played for the benefit of all the couples. Their foreheads were resting together, eyes only for each other, and there was no doubt that for those few minutes of the song’s length, only each other existed in their worlds.

It wasn’t jealous that coiled gently in his gut just then, though. He thought it might have been for just a split second. But no, it wasn’t jealousy. It was admiration and even a hint of proud fondness as he watched Kurt - the guy he thought he was in love in - swept up in a moment with the love of his life. He hadn’t been in love with Kurt, he had just been awe-struck by the notion of him... the notion of someone like Kurt loving him like he loved Blaine. That, right there, was exactly what Dave wanted for himself, and maybe now the dark fog was lifting and he had his fresh start ahead of him, he just might finally have a little flame of hope that one day, he would find it too.
