I've worked out a vague-ish backstory for EDI's...reassignment to a human body:
"After destroying the Collector base, the Normandy's artificial intelligence, EDI, suffered a catastrophic systems failure en route back to Citadel space. The only way the AI could be salvaged was in a human body, one quickly cloned by Professor Mordin Solus. EDI's consciousness, her 'personality' was transferred into this new, human body. Over time, it was adapted to interface with the shipboard databases. Now, Edi is simply an organic component of the Normandy...or so she would claim."
It still needs some tweaking, and I'd be willing to brainstorm and make changes if you so wish!
