Canon: Modernized AU. There are still student revolutions in France all the time, though usually more in the form of protests instead of barricades (usually), so it could make sense. Or we could shift it to the States, if people want. I am honestly pretty wide open.
Book, Movie, Game, Other: More people know the musical, so I take Ponine from there, but I do like to work in a bit of book as well.
