So I saw the Hobbit yesterday and about midway through started constructing a modernized world where high fantasy muses could play--because as anyone who's played a HF muse knows, it's a pain in the ass trying to reconcile their world with others'. This is heavily based on D&D because that's the world I'm most familiar with, but I think it'll fit most other HF adventurers.

In this world, magic and the supernatural are sort of an open secret, and much of it is controlled by a few hundred men and women who, by birthright or a lot of work, wield huge amounts of magical and political power. These people are in a constant power struggle behind the scenes. This is where our hand-dandy adventurers come in. Technically the term for their job is bounty hunter, but who would call themselves that instead of adventurers, right? Right. So most of these people call themselves adventurers or questers.

Obviously, in a world where swords and armor get the side-eye, people take different precautions and approaches to quests. Most teams have someone whose main job is to do research and get them a way in to get whatever it is; most of them also have a mage of some stripe, and all of them need a rogue of some variety, because most of the treasures they're meant to take aren't the kind that people will just hand over.

Nick was the object of one team's latest quest. Unlike most teams, these have a patron who funds their adventures and gives them regular jobs. This person is one of the "good" ones among the aforementioned overly powerful people, and wants to keep Nick away from people who would use his power. Nick's power is inducing random events, which generally keep him alive but often make his life harder at the same time. A lot of people would pay good money to get this power, under control or not; or even to get Nick's body to study to figure out how he has it and reproduce it. So the team's patron sent the team to retrieve him. Predictably, some offers have been made to buy Nick from the team, paying more money than their patron is offering; and not so predictably, Nick has decided he wants to be an adventurer too.

Now that the background is out of the way, here's the breakdown on the team:

The leader: Does the research, makes the plans, and handles backup for the front men.

The rogue: Young, small enough to get in and out of places and quick enough to do some lying where needed.

The mage: This one's mainly up to you, although due to Nick's nature it would be really good if this person had some power that can keep them from being detected or followed. Also one for healing, because while Nick's power keeps him alive, it doesn't always do the same for the person standing next to him.

The newbie: Their patron likes this guy or gal because they're really good at their specific skill, which is something to do with fighting and the specifics are up to you. They are, however, very new to the adventuring life and while they're eager to learn, they haven't learned to hang back when they're told to yet.

The patron: I'd like this person to be older, one of the ones who's been at it for a long time; and for them to be someone in the mundane world as well, maybe a senator.

Bonus points for any of them being plays on common HF tropes, like Nick here being the MacGuffin Boy instead of a MacGuffin Girl. I have a ton of headcanon for this world if you want it, and ideas for most of the characters if you're stuck, and I'd love more modernized high fantasy muses to join in.
