Details: Spoilers for 7x05 beneath Long story short: Rory has been possessed by the mind of the Master from a young age, because only his mind could escape during the crack, then given the body entirely by Amy remembering him as the Roman. Future!Rory-Master set up all of the prophesies and Silence entirely so that he could escape that way. River is a part of that plan, and has full knowledge of it. Angels in Manhattan was completely set up by River and future!Rory to get him a free pass off of the Doctor's radar and set it up so he could pick up little Melody in 1960. River, being the psychopathic Time Lord daughter of the Master has been using the mixed up timelines to manipulate the Doctor to the moment in Angels in Manhattan this whole time, all the way to the Library, where she uses a fake version of his screwdriver and information given to her by the Master to set up a time loop.
This is all part of a longer reaching plot of the Master's, for something once he's free and the Doctor is unaware he or River are still alive...but what that is remains to be seen. Whether Amy was aware of this the whole time and this is why she never really worried about losing Melody, or whether she finds out after Angels and becomes a thorn in their plans (or not), however, is up to Amy player, as well as the Master player.
As for the Doctor...being a psychopath, River can't really make the same kinds of emotional connections as he can, but she plays a good game of pretend, and does have certain feelings for him eventually (though her father and the plan always come first).
Anyway, it would be fun to play out this verse, perhaps with the ultimate goal of getting the Doctor to go to the Fields and achieve something different by being there.
