Hannah and Jordan are five years apart, (Hannah is currently 22 and Jordan is 17) and have different fathers. The two have never met and up until a few months ago, neither of them knew of each other's existence. Their mother, who was heavily into drugs and in an abusive relationship with Hannah's father at the time of conception, felt her daughter deserved more and decided she would put her up for adoption early on in the pregnancy. She met with several families and eventually decided Mary and Scott Prescott would best take care of her little girl.
Five years later she had Jordan. While her drug habit had been worked out, her taste in abusive men had not diminished. Jordan's father rarely came home, and when he did he was too drunk to function like a normal father. This, amongst other things, caused their mother to shut herself off from the world. While Jordan was in search of something in the garage one night, she came across something else -- a picture of her sister. When she confronted her mom she was told the truth, and while she hated that it had been kept from her for so long -- she felt hope that she may not be so alone after all. After several months of searching she found her sister, and shockingly with her mother's blessing, she took a plane to New York to meet her.
