It's honestly the mention of Abarat that solidified my interest here. I'm also a sucker for reimaginings of traditional children's stories. Double trouble, what.

Very much interested in the miller's daughter, but I also wouldn't be opposed to other fairytale creatures if you've managed to find someone in the few minutes it took to write up a reply.

I just can't stay away from any versions of fairytales that look a little deeper into the darker side of things, because, let's face it, the Grimm tales were pretty damn twisted. (And, oh, god, another Abarat fan!)

No one else has responded yet; I'm surprised (and gratified) that anyone's responded this quickly at all. :3

Delightfully twisted. There's something about trying to instill good morals in children through stories of murder and lying that is both hypocritical and effective. I love it. (Abarat, yes! I played Malingo in a panfandom game years ago and have yet to find anyone else who knows what the hell I'm talking about. Six years down, another few months to go until Absolute Midnight! /dork)

I picked the worst possible time to pop in, of course. I'll be off to bed in about an hour, but we can work out something in that time. I'm not familiar with The Book of Lost Things (but through google have decided I should be, and as quickly as possible) which I hope isn't a deterrent.

I'm not gonna lie, I can't wait. The gap between books has been exasperating; hopefully the payoff is worth it.

It's not a deterrent at all! The reference is mostly there to say that I won't be playing it straight from the original fairytale (but I do recommend the book - it's marvelous).

From what I've gathered, it's 1,500+ pages before the editing went down, plus the paintings, so. At least it'll be bulky?

Was there anything specific you had in mind as far as personality for the miller's daughter? Obviously she needs to be clever enough to have figured out Tom's real name, but were you looking for a softer sort of girl or one who is more bite? Also, as far as a fantasy setting goes, is magic of the norm or something unexpected?

Fair enough! I fell out of the loop a little bit in terms of release details.

Honestly, it's up to you! So long as, as you say, she's clever enough to fend for herself. And where magic is concerned, it's the sort of thing that goes on without people really talking about it. It's not necessarily completely out of the blue when it happens, but it's not exactly expected.

I really do need to drag myself off to bed for class in the morning, but I'll have this journal up and functioning by tomorrow afternoon. Sorry to jump in and then run off like this!

There's nothing to apologize for! (And, eee, Emilie!)

She is lovely~ I was looking for someone young-ish and blonde and then realized that the sheer number of options was overwhelming, so narrowed it down to young and blonde and occasionally pictured with child. It was amazingly effective.

Where are we jumping off from? During the deal making process or after she's had her child or somewhere else entirely? I ask a lot of questions, dear lord.

Questions are good! I have no particular preference re: story point. After she's had the kid, maybe? We can always backtrack, after all.

Sounds like a plan to me. I can have something up on SWS or posted to this journal in a bit, if you like.
