I'm not even sure I have coherent thoughts about this book, but not in the bad way. It was an incredibly overwhelming and lengthy read with action, action, and more action. Pardon if my lists don't seem terribly organized.
Likes/Positive Things
- Arya Stark. I didn't know it was possible to love her more, but I do.
- Seriously though, Arya meets the coolest/most intriguing characters. First Syrio and now Jaqen. I would be totally down with a book of Arya hanging out with those two for 800 pages.
- At the same time, I'm seriously worried that Jaqen is going to be this really terrible guy, so...
- Bran has somehow really grown on me. When I thought that he'd died, I had to look ahead in the book to see if it was true, which is a first in this series for me.
- Jon is such a fabulous character. I still adore him and like that he's finally coming into himself as a brother of the Night's Watch.
- In fact, all of the Watch has become suddenly intriguing in this book.
- I still enjoy Tyrion's character, but I'm also concerned about his allegiances and what that might mean for Robb in the upcoming books.
- The Reed children may be in my top five favorite newly introduced characters list. Bran needed some bffs, and this whole greensight thing is interesting. I hope that we get to see their lands at some point.
- Catelyn has officially grown on me in this book. I now know where Arya inherited some of her ballsiness.
- So Renly is gay with his wife's brother and somehow I totally missed that? You would have thought that the rainbow guard would have tipped me off...
Dislikes/Negative Things
- Joffrey, please stop. Just stop existing.
- I'm really upset that the Lannisters still hold the throne. Not that it's a poor plot choice, but I just dislike the Lannisters so much that I want to see them get what they have coming, whatever that may be.
- Theon Greyjoy, you are such a complete shit and I hope a direwolf pisses on your corpse.
- RIP every horse that was slain in this book. Damn.
- Again, with the rampant sexual assaults. It's war, and I get that...but yeah.
- That whole Davos chapter with the ships near the end was by far the most boring chapter in the series thus far, imo. Ships just don't do it for me.
On-going Wishlist
- I need to know what Hodor means and why Hodor keeps saying it.
- A reunion between Nymeria and Arya.
- Zombie Lady rising from the dead to eat off Cersei and Joffrey's faces. (Still not even sorry.)
- The Lannisters spiraling into ruin to unseat them from their fucking high horses.
- Sansa to channel her inner Stark/Tully to gain some ground in King's Landing.
- Or even Sansa just out of King's Landing would be good.
- Maybe Robb can get a girl? Or someone else? I might need a spot of romance that isn't Joff/Sansa.
- I would really appreciate a gay character. I guess this counts?
- Jaqen being Arya's legit kinda friend rather than someone who will fuck her over.
- Arya can never, ever die. EVER.
- Find out what A Song of Ice and Fire really is.
- A (happy) reunion between the Stark children.
I know from the end of the 3rd season of the tv series that something like three characters die at some wedding? But I have no idea who and I'm really scared that it might be one of my babies.
In fact, GRRM has me fearing for the lives of just about all of the characters, and that's the one thing that's killing me about this series. I can sense that no one is safe. And while I had this feeling with HP:DH, it's a hundred times worse with this series. GRRM doesn't play around.
