Chapter Two

Brian watched her, stirring the mint tea before he set the spoon down and let the cup rise to his lips, the lithe redhead watching him in fascination. Brian savored the tea, and then set it down, his sky-blue eyes focusing in on her.

"So, tell me...why did you try to get yourself hit by a bus...Surely life in such a modern place as Kemp Hill, Georgia can't be all that bad." He said, smiling roguishly.

His accent oozed of the North East, the drawl lengthening the end of his words and adding a slight harshness that was still easy on the ears. She'd never really found herself so captivated before by a snowbird.

"Well...it's a long story, I suppose." Her drawl came, slow and smoky, and sultry, like all the peaches he'd come across as he had traveled down the coast. He shivered despite the heat of the day and the warmth of the tea...something about Southern girls.

"Well, we've got all the time in the world, doll...how about we start with your name?"

Her face flushed the same color as her hair, and she turned to note the interesting patterns of the table. "...Rebecca....sorry, Rebecca Ann Myers." She said, and as she looked up, her shyness was abated with a bit of a smirk, a small upturning of her lips.

"Rebecca...cute, well, my last name's Hayes, but I never really figured that important enough to make conversation out of...but now that I can stop referring to you as 'she' in my mind...maybe we can get to know each other a little better."

He downed the rest of his tea, and stood, paying with more than enough money, and helping her to her feet, as she hastened to put the glass she was drinking out of down. He was restless...and it was time to move....especially since he didn't have long here.

"Where are we going now?"

"You tell me....just somewhere where we can be alone for a little."

"...I don't know about that..." Her tone was wary, apprehensive. "I hardly know you..."

"It's far too hot to be doing any of the stuff I think you think I'll do to you...I haven't gotten quite acclimated to the weather yet..."

"Uh huh....well...I guess...." She said, her smile sweet. "I'll show you a place then..."

He grinned, wrapping an arm around her shoulder.
