Earlier tonight, I finished reading Cold Days, the latest in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. And it might actually be the best book in the series yet.
No spoilers here; please keep them out of the comments for those who want to read it and haven't. Thanks. ^_^
There's something amazing about watching an author play the long game. Things happen in this book that have been set up as far back as the third. To give you some perspective, this is the fourteenth book in the series. Yes. Things are coming to light now that Mr. Butcher wrote about more than a decade ago. Not only that, the revelations in this book - and there are many, with enough plot threads twisting and colliding to make the Gordian knot look like a bow in someone's shoelaces - are definitely meant to lead into the rest of the series. The entire journey is absoltuely damn incredible. Very glad I wasn't reading the endgame at work; I'm sure it's considered rude to say "Oh shit, oh SHIT!" out loud in the break room during lunch hours.
Not only that, but in a series that runs this long, you run into the danger of hitting a formula with each book. The last three books, this one included, put Harry through such utter change that each one makes it clear nothing will ever be the same again. Harry gets put through the wringer, as always, but it's different now, as he knows more of the stakes and finds that they're higher and have been going on longer than he could have possibly imagined.
It's also just generally awesome and hilarious as all hell. And someone finally makes a pop culture reference that Harry doesn't get.
If you're not reading this series, you are seriously missing out. Just sayin'.
