To Live

 to absorb books like water,
       or make pictures like nature,
   gives the greatest boon - ability -
             to a child, for i am a child

in need of a greater world
       than massachusetts,
   a mere corner of the globe
           time has worn out for me

for while i can explore the earth
        in a single, well-stocked library
    it is not enough, to imagine
           to see through others' eyes

in a chair, like a less tangible
        movie theater. no, i must go
    far, far away to realize
         the definition of "live"

i will send you a postcard
         when i am lost in a foreign
     country, wandering through
         something i have never done before
