Day 8: Tearful Farewells
Another light activity day as we traveled from Cape Coast back to Accra. Along the was we stopped at Fort Amsterdam, another Dutch castle that became a final point of departure for slaves bound for the New World. The fort is a ruin unlike Cape Coast or Elmina, but it really is a beautiful structure despite its dark history. The builders used ground up seashells as binder for the mortar, and you can still see the shells in the walls. Fort Amsterdam is in the village of Abandze, which is allegedly the ancestral home of Louis Armstrong.
Once we reached Accra we took the time for on last shopping expedition (yeah, right) before heading to the goodbye dinner for the larger part of the group. Our guide, Jonathan, was wonderful, and we praised him effusively. Fortunately for dad and I, he will be with us for the last 3 days of our trip.
