Track 8
Muse: Emma Frost
Fandom: Marvel-Verse
Track: "Could I Be You"
Artist: Matchbox Twenty
Album: "More Than You Think You Are"

Emma absolutely refused to sing at Mike’s party that he threw. She wasn’t certain if people understood her reasoning or not, but she wasn’t about to explain it to them, either.

She had managed to take a look at the people who had gathered, and at the songs available. There had been one that had remained permanently stuck in her mind, yet she knew she couldn’t sing it. She also knew that she couldn’t approach Lorna about it, either.

Something is wrong with the sum of us
That I can't seem to erase
How can I be the only one
Without a smile on my face

She played the song on the drive home, not speaking to Scott at all since their latest altercation. The words struck her, though. How could she remain in charge of the school when things were changing, and changing quickly? Hank had mentioned that he had returned and would be willing to speak to anyone, and yet she wanted to talk to Lorna. There was something about the woman that infuriated her and made her proud all at once.

Well now, you're laughing out loud
At just the thought of being alive
And I was wondering
Could I just be you tonight?

How could Lorna manage her life the way that it was? Constantly juggling things and people, and somehow refusing to be as judgmental as most of the others (including Emma) had been as of late? Lorna seemed adored, and Emma would never tell her that it made her slightly jealous to see that she had succeeded in many things that Emma had failed at - reaching a compromise with Jean, for example.

You show your pain like it really hurts
And I can't even start to feel mine
Well, I'm standing in place
With my head first and I shake, I shake
I see your progress stretched out for miles and miles

Scott said nothing as Emma continued to listen to the words of the song she should have sung. She was slowly turning into Scott in many ways - craving the control and going nowhere, while Lorna screamed to the heavens and drew attention. Granted, somehow she managed to draw the ire of the Brotherhood quite easily, and yet she still had an open communication.

This is the sound that I make
These are the words I chose
Somehow the right thing to say
Just won't come out
Just won't come out

But, Emma Frost would not be Emma Frost if she became Lorna. Perhaps there were lessons to be learned, such as actually opening up to the very few people she considered her friends, but she wasn’t certain how to do so. Vulnerability was her weakness, ironically. She had not even confessed to Scott what had happened while Alex had been in the hospital… and would it even matter if she had?

And you're laughing out loud
At the thought of being alive
And I was wondering
Could I just be you tonight?

Yet, Lorna and Alex seemed perfectly in love. Happy. Content, even when they argued. Perhaps, even if she could not bring herself to speak to Lorna about her own feelings, she could speak to Scott. Perhaps it would make things better between them. Lorna had her own demons to deal with, true, but Emma saw the restless spirit within her. She’d managed to capture her love, to prove herself worthy, and she listened when people gave advice.

Could I just be you tonight?

Emma sighed as the car pulled into the driveway at the mansion and the engine shut off. She and Scott went directly to bed without speaking.
