Forty days and forty nights pass, at least in the world she left behind. Ynez never gets around to counting the parade of pebbles that mark the passage of her days with the old ones. She has no idea how long she has been with them, but her skin darkens and toughens in the sun, and a sprinkle of gray strands appear in her wild dark hair. The scars on her hips and leg settle and fade, silvery ropes that tie her firmly to her own foolishness forever. She has good days and bad with her head and all that it contains, but she learns to persevere. She suffers, but she learns.
The time comes, as it was bound to, for her time in the desert to end.
She cannot leave her home behind forever. Not yet.
There is still much to be cared for, and a life left hanging when she fled.
And so, forty days later, she limps back out of the wilderness. Las Vegas is a streaky puddle on the horizon, transparent in the heat. The last hour’s walk is the hardest, as it always is. Her father’s people are waiting for her. Soon enough, she will find her way back, all the way back to the place she came from.
Ynez has faced her demons. She knows now who she is. What she does not know is how she came to forget it in the first place.
She carries her own universe with her now, wherever she goes. It will not be lost again. Only time will tell how the people she walked away from will react to it.
