Tea-chah! Tea-chah!

I had my first Adult music appreciation seminar tonight and it went phenominally well. It took me a little while to get into what I was actually talking about, but the presentation was very interactive and engaging. The topic of my talk was "Stories in Music" and I focused on the Orpheus story in Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto, but drew on several other musical examples to display how composers used their education to portray feelings and stories. I actually told them the Orpheus story, then played the movement in question, and had them retell the story to me using the musical examples. I got them to describe the music to me!! That's always a great sign, esp. in a group setting of amateur music lovers who don't know the real Italian terminology. The whole concluding thought to the lecture was that there is no evidence from Beethoven to support the Orphic connection, but does it make it any less valid? Does creating a story about a piece of music make it any less meaningful? Of course not! Engage yourself! Overall, I thought the talk was great, and the Director of Community Engagement loved it. She actually invited me back to give it again at the library after Christmas. :-D

Anyway, I was pleased. And tomorrow night, I've got comp tickets to go see the Munich Symphony do the same piece. :-) YAY!

Now I'm off to a lasagna dinner with some friends. TATA!
