Discworld Theme Songs

Sep 05, 2009 02:02

This is going to sound decidedly silly, I know. But I like playing around and coming up with theme songs for various thing - movies, books, characters, whatever.

At the moment I've been trying to come up with themes for the Discworld.  I have ideas for some, but am at a loss for others.  Help?

These are the possibilities I've come up with so far  -  do you like or do you think I'm off?  I've included lyrics under an LJ cut.

Books

The Truth
 -  'Destroyed'   by  Within Temptation
(In all honestly, I'm not sure if this song is better suited to the book or to the character of William, so I've put it down for both.  Thoughts?)

Mort
   -  'Don't Fear the Reaper'   by  Blue Oyster Cult

Soul Music
    -  'Baker Street'   by  Gerry Rafferty
    or
    -  'I Love Rock and Roll'   by  Joan Jett

Thief of Time
    -  'Victoriam Speramus'   by  Krypteria

Thud
    -  'Still Waiting'   by  Sum 41

Characters

William de Word
    -  'Destroyed'   by  Within Temptation

Sam Vimes
    -  'Fine Again'   by  Seether

Jonathan Teatime
    -  'A Dangerous Mind'   by  Within Temptation

If you're curious about why I chose each song, .

Destroyed
by Within Temptation

I did my best to please you
But my best was never good enough
Somehow you're only able to see
All I am not

Did you ever look behind
Aren't you afraid of the pieces you'll find
I have failed you
but you have failed me too

I close my eyes as I walk the thin line
between love and hate
For the person with the same blood in his veins

You show no regrets
about all the things you did or said
I have failed you
but believe me
you failed me too

It's so easy to destroy
and condemn
The ones you do not understand
do you ever wonder if it's justified

It's so easy to destroy
and condemn
The ones you do not understand
in your life why didn't you ever try

It's so easy to destroy
and condemn
The ones you do not understand
do you ever wonder if it's justified

Don't Fear the Reaper
by Blue Oyster Cult

All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
(we can be like they are)
Come on baby
(don't fear the reaper)
Baby take my hand
(don't fear the reaper)
We'll be able to fly
(don't fear the reaper)
Baby I'm your man...

Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity
(Romeo and Juliet)
40,000 men and women everyday
(Like Romeo and Juliet)
40,000 men and women everyday
(Redefine happiness)
Another 40,000 coming everyday
(We can be like they are)
Come on baby
(don't fear the reaper)
Baby take my hand
(don't fear the reaper)
We'll be able to fly
(don't fear the reaper)
Baby I'm your man...

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared
(saying don't be afraid)
Come on baby
(and she had no fear)
And she ran to him
(then they started to fly)
They looked backward and said goodby
(she had become like they are)
She had taken his hand
(she had become like they are)
Come on baby
(don't fear the reaper)

Baker Street
by Gerry Rafferty

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you’ll drink the night away
And forget about everything.

This city desert makes you feel so cold
It’s got so many people but it’s got no soul
And it’s taken you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything.

You used to think that it was so easy,
You used to say that it was so easy
But you’re tryin’, you’re tryin’ now.
Another year and then you’d be happy
Just one more year and then you’d be happy
But you’re cryin’, you’re cryin’ now.

Way down the street there’s a light in his place
He opens the door, he’s got that look on his face
And he asks you where you’ve been, you tell him who you’ve seen
And you talk about anything.

He’s got this dream about buyin’ some land
He’s gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he’ll settle down, in some quiet little town
And forget about everything.

But you know he’ll always keep movin’
You know he’s never gonna stop movin’
Cause he’s rollin’, he’s the rollin’ stone.
And when you wake up it’s a new morning
The sun is shining, it’s a new morning
But you’re going, you’re going home.

I Love Rock and Roll
by Joan Jett

I saw him dancin' there by the record machine
I knew he must 'a been about seventeen
The beat was going strong
Playin' my favorite song
An' I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till he was with me, yeah me
An' I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till he was with me, yeah me singin'

I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me
OW..
He smiled so I got up an' asked for his name
That don't matter, he said,
'Cause it's all the same

Said can I take you home
where we can be alone

An' next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah me

Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah me, singin'

I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me
Ow..

Said can I take you home where we can be alone

Next we'll be movin' on
He was with me, yeah me
An we'll be movin' on
An' singin' that same old song
Yeah with me, singin'

I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me

Victoriam Speramus
by Krypeteria

When all the lights go down and when the final curtain falls
When there is nothing left to say
Eternity eventually will linger through abandoned halls
Will leave us struck in disarray

The time has come for us to earn ourselves a new day
Go down on bended knees and pray

Victoriam speramus, damnate timiditam
Concordiam optamus, iuvate libertatem
Victoriam speramus, negate subversorem
Concordiam optamus nunc

One man's peace of mind might be another man's despair
In these our enigmatic times
While some pray for redemption
Some hope they'll redeem themselves through prayer
To each his own, this is your life

The time has come for us to earn ourselves a new day
Go down on bended knees and pray

Victoriam speramus, damnate timiditam
Concordiam optamus, iuvate libertatem
Victoriam speramus, negate subversorem
Concordiam optamus nunc

Victoriam speramus, damnate timiditam
Concordiam optamus, iuvate libertatem
Victoriam speramus, negate subversorem
Concordiam optamus, victoriam speramus
Negate subversorem, concordiam optamus nunc

Still Waiting
by Sum 41

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

Drop dead
A bullet to my head
Your words are like a gun in hand
Can't change the state of the nation
We just need some motivation

These eyes
Have seen no conviction
Just lies and more contradiction
So tell me what would you say
I'd say it's time
too late

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

Ignorance
And understanding
We're the first ones to jump in line
Outta step for what we believe in
But who's left to stop the bleeding

How far
Will we take this
It's not hard to see through the fakeness
So tell me what would you say
I'd say it's time
too late

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

This can't last forever
Time won't make things better
I feel so alone
Can't help ourselves
And no one knows
That this is its worthless so tell me

What have we done
We're in a war that can't be won
This can't be real
I don't know what to feel

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
Can't find hope to believe in

So am I still waiting
For this world to stop hating
Can't find a good reason
For this world to BELIEVE

Fine Again
by Seether

It seems like every day’s the same
and I’m left to discover on my own
It seems like everything is gray
and there’s no color to behold
They say it’s over and I’m fine again, yeah
Try to stay sober feels like I’m dying here

And I am aware now of how
everything’s gonna be fine one day
Too late, I’m in hell I am prepared now,
seems everyone’s gonna be fine<
One day too late, just as well

I feel the dream in me expire
and there’s no one left to blame it on
I hear you label me a liar
‘cause I can’t seem to get this through
You say it’s over, I can sigh again, yeah
Why try to stay sober when I’m dying here

And I am aware now of how
everything’s gonna be fine one day
Too late, I’m in hell
I am prepared now,
seems everyone’s gonna be fine
One day too late; just as well

And I’m not scared now.
I must assure you,
you’re never gonna get away
And I’m not scared now.
And I’m not scared now. No…

I am aware now of how
everything’s gonna be fine one day
Too late, I’m in hell
I am prepared now
seems everyone’s gonna be fine
One day too late, just as well
I am prepared now,
seems everything’s gonna be fine for me
For me; for myself.
For me, for me, for myself
For me, for me, for myself

A Dangerous Mind
by Within Temptation

I'm searching for answers
'cause something is not right.
I follow the signs,
I'm close to the fire.

I fear that soon you'll reveal
Your dangerous mind.

It's in your eyes, what's on your mind.
I fear your smile and the promise inside.
It's in your eyes, what's on your mind.
I fear your presence, I'm frozen inside.

I'm searching for answers
Not questioned before.
The curse of awareness,
There's no peace of mind.
As your true colours show
A dangerous sign.

It's in your eyes, what's on your mind.
I see the truth that you've buried inside.
It's in your eyes, what's on your mind.
There is no mercy just anger I find.

I just have know, while I still have time.
Do I have to run, or hide away from you?

It's in your eyes, what's on your mind.
I see the truth that you've buried inside.
It's in your eyes, what's on your mind.
There is no mercy just anger I find.
