Why I don't fly the American flag

Sep 02, 2006 10:27

I was just forwarded an email from a friend - one of these "forward this to everyone you know!" kind of things. The point of the email was to exhort people to be sure to fly the American flag on 9/11.

I just read the whole post (looking to see if Christina had responded to my earlier post - I'm soo vain) and I read the whole post this time - including the email.

9/11 is america's worst tragedy? W.T.F. The people who parade this nonsense need to be smacked upside the head with a heavy bucket of truth. Very heavy. I greive for all the innocents who lost their life or their loved one's that day, but allow me to bring a little perspective to the party.

Pearl Harbor - 2,400 killed, almost 1,400 wounded (407,000 died in WWII)

Japanese Internment Camps - 120,000 Detained against their will - nearly 75,000 of them full-fledged american citizens

Civil War - claimed 3.26 MILLION american lives (2.2 million Union Soldiers)

Slavery - Who knows how many died? Do we count each man as 3/5th of a death as well? At least that'll bring down the number.

Manifest Destiny and the Native American Genocide - again, no one can count the dead, but during the Trail of Tears 17,000 were put into a forced march from their homes, and 4,000 died along the way.

Ugh - now I'm mad.

Damn - that's what happens when you're mad and don't read through your article before you post - 620,000 americans DIED during the civil war - 3.2 million just actively tried to kill each other.

Egg, face, me.

Only a little bit of egg. Your point is absolutely correct.

(And hell, if we compare it to the loss of life from the tsunami last year, or the frequent earthquakes in the Middle East, it's a drop in the bucket.)

(Dude - sign up for an LJ account! That way you'll get emailed when I respond to your comments!)(*exerts peer pressure*)

Everyone's got a fine line which they will not cross. Mine is getting a blog. Admittedly it's a dumb and arbitrary line, but I am am not a blog person at heart - I even just used the word "blog-person" and not the popular "blogger".
