What is Below

the pavement of this city? 6 block ride along the 29th Ave "Greenway" - the old Soo Line rail bed now converted into an inter-city bicycle freeway connecting the west bank of the River to the inner ring of suburbs: Hopkins and St. Louis Park. Pedal up the short incline at Nicollet. Transverse to the northbound lane of the old masonry bridge bearing a 1914 date stamp. Quick. Avoid the new pothole. Stop. Stare. In this pothole, 2 inches below the surface of asphalt, red bricks and rusty rail can be glimpsed. An artifact of the Nicollet Avenue Street Car Line. Last street car to run in this city was 1957.
