Avatar-induced depression?

Honestly now, I wonder how some people are ending up depressed coming out of Avatar. Sure the world was beautiful, as were the creatures and the connections, and yeah, I wish I had a skeletal frame surrounded by naturally-occurring carbon fiber; but it's a MOVIE. Hell, sometimes I wish I had super-healing abilities and adamantium claws, but that's probably not going to be happening anytime soon either. Neither is getting rid of my heartbeat going to change things.

I guess if I were to take the movie for what it was and not compare it to previous inspirations like "Dances with Wolves" and atrocities like "The Last Samurai", the movie did make plenty of good points... as well as ironically fly right over some VERY important other points, as Annie mentioned, about racial issues and the United States, or about the racial issues IN the U.S. Oh the irony...

Still, to those people who're getting depressed and thinking about offing themselves, we need to be able to separate reality from film. James Cameron did a damn fine job making this movie. To be able to make a movie that has so powerful of an impact on the psyches of so many people who would otherwise have been normal (don't know their personality types) takes some level of skill that deserves to be rewarded.

Speaking of separation, this is where I'm going to take my turn on the subject. I think I've finally figured out how I'm going to separate the use of my LJ and Xanga accounts. This is where I'll be putting more socially-oriented thoughts, while my Xanga is where I'll be... well, lazier. That'll mostly be where I write down events as opposed to the thoughts and musings that'll be here.

Still on separations: as much as I recognize how well-made Avatar was, I'm still going to have to give it 7 out of 10. Points go to graphics, the way the plot played out, and character development, mostly. It doesn't get the last 3 for me because I swear I've seen this story in a thousand other places, and that made the movie a bit predictable.

So all in all, as much as I enjoyed the movie, I couldn't help but feel like I was watching "Dances With Wolves"... with awesome blue people. And they win. And this is a trilogy. I have to admit, I'm curious about how the next two films are going to play out. Curious enough to go and watch them? Well, if there's anything movie trilogies of the past have taught me, it's to avoid the last two films.
