What am I missing?

I live in a home with two computer users, and one DSL line. Over the couple of years this has been a two-computer house, I've tried to share connections with two separate, purchased external routers. No success.

As a result of other issues, I wound up installing Linux on my box a few months back. This afternoon, I tried setting up the Linux box as a router. The second Ethernet card is in place, recognized, configured, and all that. I think I have DHCP on the Linux set up so that, when the Windows box is plugged in, it will look just like the DSL modem.

But there's another hitch. The boxen don't see each other. When I plug them into each other, they don't see each other. When I plug them into a mini-hub I have, they see that something is on the other end of the line, but can't communicate with it.

I've tried multiple Ethernet cables (every one I can find on hand, both straight and twisted pair) and numerous port combinations on the hub. (There are eight ports, so . . . do the math on possible port combinations, eh? ;) ) No change.

Any suggestions what I'm most likely missing?
