In our
last installment, Our Hero was waiting for a driver CD to arrive in the mail. It arrived today.
The email from Tech Support Guy had a list of drivers I should install, and the order that I should install them in. Using the CD, I was mostly able to comply with his instructions; the ultimate file (a BIOS upgrade) was missing. Since one of the drivers had been for the network adapter, I was actually able to get the system back online.
Since I had to go to the Dell web site anyway, I started the list from the top again. After finishing the list, I checked some of the data CDs that caused me to begin this process. Not only was the system unable to read them, it also seemed to have lost the ability to read the Dell driver CD.
All was not lost, however, as it could easily read the Civ III CD. And that's the important part. It's not as if anyone, like, creates data that needs backing up or anything, right? Or even (horrors!) burns a CD to install the version of Linux that Dell recommends, eh?
Since Tech Support Dude was unwise enough to send the message from his own account, I'll reply with a longer version of this installment. With luck, the next item on his checklist will be emailed back while I'm at work Monday.
