Paul: Friend and former boss. In mid-conversation, Paul pulled out the best line. I remembered it because I thought it would make a good bumper sticker. He said: "Compromise if you have to but don't plan ahead for it". If one of you fuckers tells me that's a famous quote, I'm gonna bash you.

===============================

When it comes to food, I'm a creature of habit. At my favourite Vietnamese restaurant, I always get Vietnamese style pork spare ribs, replacing the white rice with ginger rice. The sandwich bar at work doesn't even ask me what I want anymore. They prepare a chicken roll with extra mayo and extra salt in advance. If choosing a soft drink, I will only ever go for Coke, Sparkling Duet or Schweppes Dry Lemonade.

Last night I broke my routine. With Paul's guidance, he took me to a new bar for pre-drinks and then a new restaurant for dinner. Keeping with the theme of the night, I opted out of having an entree, main and dessert. Instead, I took the eleven course special.

Best idea ever.

Although - in being a creature of food habit - I love the comfort of knowing you're about to inhale something you love, the lesson from last night is that "the best" is only "the best" until you find something better.

Search, sample and throw your tastes about and you're bound to strike an eleven course meal sooner or later.
