Yes, I've been back in NJ for about 2 months. I realize that, and I know I'm finishing my MD craziness a little late. Get over it.
Friday (Aug 6) - While watering in the morning, I talked to Lilly about shit that went down on Elliot Island while she was there. She informed that that Kody called intern Brian a “piece of shit”. This was prompted because after weeks of not being able to go to Elliot Island (because of poor planning on EC's part), the inerns were Finally able to go. Only about a week after they were sent to the island to work, Brian had to travel home to PA to take care of his sick farm animals because his parents were going out of town. Also, he wanted to check in with his aunt and uncle who had just been robbed. Kody was just pissed that Brian wanted to leave for a few days to take care of family business. Obviously that makes Brian a "piece of shit". <.< Lilly told me that the workers on the island said the portapotty gets tipped every night, so the inside is covered in shit and urine. Awesome. There is no running water for the workers, and EC does not provide water. This is in the middle of the hottest summer in recent history. It's so nice that they take good care of their employees. The plants they are planting on Elliot Island are diseased plants. So, y'know, they could Easily pass disease along to any of the plants already there. Lilly said that they used WAY too much fertilizer, and most of it just gets washed into the water with the tide. She said the day there was madness. I was pretty glad that I stayed at EC in the nursery. After Lilly told me everything, we seeded some Duck Potato, gathered the restoration crew's order, and cleaned seed. The day ended with Lilly’s presentation which was fucking hilarious. She wrote honestly about her opinion of EC, and everyone was clearly uncomfortable...except for those of us in on the joke. Oh, wait, that's just me. Leslie surprisingly provided us with ice cream and frozen yogurt to enjoy during Lilly's presentation. At the end of the day, Lilly gave lots of hugs. I helped her pick out some nice acer rubrum (oh, the irony!) to take home. We said our goodbyes, and that was it. I was really, really bummed about her going. The last thing she said to me, as we were hugging goodbye, was, “Thanks for making this fun.” I thought I was going to cry. I picked up my black willow and my lobelia cardinalis, and headed home. I walked to cash my check and walked to Graul’s for liquor. That night, I spent lots of time on the computer, wrote letters, mailed letters, and jogged. I was in bed by midnight.
