Girl in the Fireplace

I've seen the Big Queue items in the Louvre, but to be honest they didn't do that much for me. The Mona Lisa is tiny and hidden by a big scrum of people, and the Venus de Milo is okay, but crowd-ridden again.

Personally, I've found that I prefer the French sculptors, especially as many of their works are gathered together in an atrium where they get natural light under the glass. I'm nowhere close to having covered everything in the Louvre, but that's the one area that I try to make the time to go back to on each and every trip.

This time I went a bit snap happy with the camera while I was at it, and among other things took a few pictures of sculptures that were modelled on Madame de Pompadour and Louis XV. Definitely kind of handy, if you want to know what people actually looked like. :-)

Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne's "Vertumne et Pomone".

Again, by Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne and based on Madame de Pompadour, but I don't know the name of it. Clearly I need every other photo to be a name tag. If you look behind it, Vertumne et Pomone can be seen in the background.

Yay for Doctor Who connections! ;-)
