Okay, so, you know it's NaNo (am 6k+ behind *sadface*). I haven't really posted too much, aside from a couple of posts about boys (nothing's changed, by the way) and a Pinto fic.
BUT OMG I HAVE A NEW FANDOM LOVE.
In my AP English class, we just finished The Crucible by Arthur Miller and watched the (utterly amazing) film version with Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder.
Reactions:
1) OMG ABIGAIL IS SPOCK'S MOM. I for real freaked out when I realized they were played by the same actress.
2) JOHN PROCTOR LOOKS LIKE ARAGORN AND THEN LIKE JESUS. This could prove to be a problem, as he's hot.
3) REVEREND HALE IS AMAZING. I love the text of the play -- besides Abigail and Proctor, Hale has the best lines ever. "I quit this court! I denounce these proceedings and quit this court!" is totally a Crowning Moment of Awesome for the whole play. And in the movie he's so adorable. I feel so awful when he gets all of his beliefs completely shattered.
4) HALE TOTES HAS A CRUSH ON PROCTOR. I realized this in Act 2 of the movie, and then, once I got to Act 3 of the play, I was like, "Really? Hale, subtlety, have some." Seriously, he's totally fine, manages to sign seventeen death warrants, and is always totally on Abigail's team from the start (he's on the goddamn court). But in Act 2, Proctor calls him a "broken minister," and in the film he really seems to take it to heart. Then, in Act 3, he totally switches teams and is like "I THINK HE'S TELLIN TRUFAX I DUN LYK DIS ABIGAIL CHICK NO MOR" precisely when Proctor shows up. Like, the deposition, the confession of lechery...(in the movie there's this fantastic reaction shot from Hale when Proctor says "I have known her" to Danforth. He looks so sad, and it doesn't seem like clergy-sadness. It seems like person-sadness to me.). And then, when at last Proctor has his wonderful "GOD IS DEAD!" moment, and he's arrested, and Hale just up and quits the court and leaves Salem altogether? THE DRAMA. MY HEARTSTRINGS, HALE, YOU HAVE PULLED THEM. And finally, in Act 4, he comes back after some kind of spiritual epiphany to convince the innocent condemned to save their lives by confessing. And, when Proctor's hauled away for hanging, Hale's final line to Elizabeth, about how she should go to him, and not let him die for nothing, it so screams of "If I were you..." and...oh, in the movie, when Hale looks out on Proctor's hanging from afar, and he's on the horse, oh, my heart broke.
Another fantastic movie!only moment is when Hale rides back into town, and Abigail sees him from afar and recognizes him. Immediately, she goes to the judges, and says she feels like Reverend Hale's wife's spirit is trying to claw her eyes out at night. It doesn't really have an explanation -- but we do know what Abigail's motive this whole time has been: Marry John Proctor. It's entirely possible she sees the emotion Hale feels toward Proctor (she's present for the scenes in Act 3) and so wants to destroy her last rival by hurting his nearest and dearest.
Hnnnnngh, it's so perfect and tragic and angsty. I've written a few drabbles, if anyone's interested, and put together a list of songs that need Crucible music videos. "Teeth" by Lady Gaga is pretty much Abigail's frickin' theme song.
