CHARACTER NAME: Lawrence
AGE: 19
APPEARANCE:
http://fav.me/d3a4bqtBRIEF WORLD INFO:
Lawrence comes from the Kingdom of St. Helena, a prosperous and well-defined, European/American-styled country. St. Helena covers a great portion of the continent. To the south, the Holy Desert of Belacuna can be found. To the north, the Wayward Lands/Frontier, an area uninhabited by humans due to the high levels of magic. For reference,
here is a super nifty map I need to redraw some day.
The premise behind the Kingdom of St. Helena revolves around magic. Magic is, in a way, an element of the world. Natural to its surroundings, Magic can manipulate and change things overtime. Humans, on the other hand, have a different life signal than most creatures in their world. You could even say that humans aren't... natural to the world around them. Because of this, humans are born with varying degrees of magic absorbtion. Those who carry a high amount also carry the burden of overdosing on magic and becoming chimera, monsters born from high emotion and mutated human flesh.
Because of this, the Saintess Helena united the continent to create a safe kingdom around the concept of human equality and the protection of the human mind and soul. Her humanitarian works told of taking care of the sick and magically infused and treating them like human beings, not monsters. The Kingdom of St. Helena emphasizes on the studies of art, medicine, and chivalry in this day and age. While the walls of the kingdom are safe, this isn't necessarily so for other lands. Some kingdoms shun magic as unnatural to the body, and others simply go with the flow and use magic in religious and spiritual beliefs.
Those born with magic (a great deal of the population) are ranked by their type of magic and level of magic. For example, Lawrence is a Rank 4 Healer. Out of a scale of 1-5, he is a good healer, but not the best. His magic is used to stop the flow of blood from leaving the body and to help individuals who are in life-threatening situations. Healers, of course, are no replacements for hospitals. If help does not arrive in the term of medical science, then a wounded human is more likely to die (and perhaps even the healer) from a healer's fatigue.
On another note, the world where St. Helena resides is full of magical beasts and even conscientious animals. Some feed on the magical energy of humans, as humans act like "vaults" for magic. In this situation, Lawrence is a young man possessed by a crow prince. In a desperate attempt to save his sister's life, he gambles his own soul (and hers) by taking her place. We'll hear about that more in his history!
BRIEF CHARACTER HISTORY:
As the eldest child of four in a farmer's household, Lawrence grew up with a smile on his face. His mother, a retired witch, nourished his mind with books and talks of the city which was far off into the distance, the epicenter of the country. Having always lived on a farm, Lawrence never really thought about his life beyond the walls. With his three sisters, he continued life as merry as he could. Studying, working, and preparing himself for the school exams. His mother, always doting on him, wanted him to do his best.
Lawrence, of course, wanted the best. He also wanted, more than anything, to create change in the world. What better way than to study at the Royal School of Alchemy? His parents couldn't afford such a school, but this kid fought. He sent letters and eventually was granted a scholarship right before his twelfth birthday.
That's when it all changed for him.
Starstruck by the city life and the social and economical aspects surrounding it, Lawrence began to struggle with his own social background and the implications behind it. Poor, titleless. Even at school, he found himself disappointed with the norms of cityfolk. And yet, in a way, Lawrence thrived here. He was incredibly social and friendly, but it wasn't a surprise to wonder if he was simply faking the smiles on his face.
Every harvest season and holiday break, Lawrence would come home to the farm. It was an eight hour train ride from the city, and to return to the farmlands grew more and more disenchanting to him as time passed on. The eldest of his sisters, Samantha, soon began to notice his changing mood. His sister is almost the exact opposite of him. Quite and shy, she eventually tries to convince him to just remain in the city if it's what makes him happy. There's no point, after all, to take care over the family farm if there's no heart or soul behind it.
Reflecting on this, Lawrence goes back to school. During his school years, he befriends two younger students named Edel and Elanore. Elanore, an enthusiastic crime/detective fanatic, and Edel- a quiet, antisocial noble child, were Lawrence's comrades during his years at school. They would do everything together, from exploring ruins to studying late at night at the last minute for exams, they were... usually inseparable.
Except, well.
Edel was a bit of an issue for Lawrence.
After putting on a mask for so long of someone who was often happy and cheerful, Lawrence found himself increasingly aggravated with Edel's existence. He was the son of a noblewoman, and although Edel did not mention his family often, Lawrence gained a curious air of his situation. He was incredibly antagonistic towards Lawrence when he would ask him questions, but Lawrence often took advantage of Edel's social status "for him", you could say. They went into the forbidden libraries, to social gatherings, and other sorts of events until Edel couldn't handle it anymore.
So they fought. Actually, it was more like Edel totally lost it and tried to bludgeon Lawrence with a book.
Right. Bad friendship. But once they got past this, perhaps his wounded pride was enough to change Lawrence. Although he was conniving and manipulative- Lawrence was certainly a young man who craved power and change, he finally saw how he was damaging those around him at his own expense.
So perhaps, in a way, their friendship could restart.
Unfortunately, this all changed when Lawrence went home to the farm for the last time. Samantha, his lovely little sister, was lured by a monster to be lunch, you could say. In an attempt to save his sister, Lawrence sacrifices himself in her place. It was a gamble. Lawrence would give up his body and soul for the monster (crow prince!) in order to allow his sister a chance to save both of them. Lawrence goes missing for two years before his sister comes back to challenge the crow prince (and fight her brother's body, of course. of course. )
Can you tell? This story actually stars his sister. A girl who, against all odds, struggles to become a knight in order to save her brother's soul.
Spoilers! : She totally does!!!
Anyway, so in the end, Lawrence - although still possessed by the crow prince, owes his soul to his sister (...so does the crow prince that possesses him.) He's now struggling to return to school and contain the possession.
As of now, Lawrence is the apprentice to both a swordmaster and a necromancer in order to strengthen his will and contain full control of his possession. Oh, and Edel?
You could say their friendship restarted and things are looking up for both of them. Imagine that! It's like a prince and a pauper sort of deal.
PERSONALITY:
Lawrence always smiles.
Right, what does this have to do with personality? Certainly, Lawrence's smiles are often a mask for him to hide his true feelings. He's polite and to the point, but he also has a bit of a sense of humour and a light... air about him from a distance. Those who know him well can tell he has a wicked way of thinking, but in all honesty- he just wants what's best for himself and his family. His personality is certainly not one of a healer-type. He's ambitious and an intellectual, something that causes Edel so much strife and jealousy throughout their school years. Really, Lawrence isn't much of a study bug, but he's quick to understand concepts and very practical in thought. He loves to create a good mood in the classroom and isn't one to shy away from the spotlight.
He's very much a family man.
Lawrence has a mother, father, and three sisters. To him, these people mean more to him than anything. He wants to create a world where his sisters won't have to worry about their social status and a world where his parents, who work so very hard and help feed a nation, aren't treated subpar. He wants to go into the political practices of St. Helena in order to cause change and to fight the comforts of the noble society. For a country so bent on protecting mental and magical health, the starving social-economic health is rather apparent to him.
Lawrence is curious. Incredibly thoughtful, but certainly curious for his own advantage.
Not to mention, he's quite a sweet talker.
Always wanting to be on the good side of others, Lawrence plays himself as dumb and understated to strangers (And outside of the classroom). He smiles and asks many questions- he likes to make others talk more than have himself talk. He learns more from others and he can pick and choose what to learn and what to discard. He quite likes to compliment ladies old and young as he is the type of person who likes to impress women with his abilities. Honestly, in a way, you could say that Lawrence sees a bit of his mother in a lot of ladies and he wants to try to not disappoint them. He loves his mother very, very, very much. The last thing he wants to do is hurt her after all she's gone through.
If someone sees through Lawrence's facades, it certainly catches him off guard. He'll do his best to transition to his normal self- he's cynical and to the point. He'll try to be quick in speech and not give others leeway- but always, you can be sure, his defenses are at an all time high.
On a final note, uh. Lawrence is highly affectionate to family members and people he really likes? He doesn't really agree to keep out of someone's personal bubble because he's just like that. Geez, Lawrence. Try to be a little more thoughtful!
ABILITIES:
A note : Lawrence is currently possessed by a crow prince. Although at times he might hear the voices of the crow speak to him, he will remain dormant throughout the roleplay. One may notice a somewhat unnatural amount of crows curiously peeking at their prince from above, but they are only little ladies with crushes on royalty. Lawrence is neither fond or in distaste of them.
Abilities :
- Lawrence is a 4th Ranked Healer in St. Helena. This means he is capable of curing small wounds and stabilizing patients with magic, but if they are not properly treated he can not keep them alive. He is like an ambulance! A mobile support unit to prepare someone for the real team of healers/doctors.
- Lawrence is a quick-blade user. He briefly studies under a swordmaster to understand the blade. He often uses cutlasses or thin, light (if long) bladed swords. Some are of an asian influence. If this were an RPG, Lawrence's positive stats would be STR/SPD/CRIT.
- Alchemy. As a student of the School of Alchemy in St. Helena, Lawrence isn't a very bookish individual, but he has quite a bit of intellect. The alchemy known in St. Helena is more of a medicinal quality. Alchemists are instructed to assists pharmacists in creating potions and healing items, but they are also known to dwell in the dark arts. Chimera production, bending properties, and poisons are all a part of the curriculum for a would be royal alchemist. Oh! And cooking/baking, too! (That's... chemistry, right?)
- Farmboyah. Is this an ability? Lawrence's father is the head of a farm in the outskirts of St. Helena. Although his son has never taken any interest in the art of farming, Lawrence does enjoy being around animals and taking care of them. He will most likely hang out around the farms in Exit Void, because seriously- those poor animals. He can horseback ride, fish, and tend crops.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[ There is a video feed turning on now. Not just any video feed, mind you! This is the video feed of a young man, hair brushed over his face with a smile on his face. He looks at the feed but then his gaze turns to the side as he thinks. Oh, and believe me, he's thinking. ]
Honestly, this seems to be quite a dilemma I'm in. One moment, you're running late to see your master, the next you're face-planted on the sandy grounds of a beach. How curious, if a bit terrifying- wouldn't you agree?
[ His smile lessens- surely someone who's worried about their location and situation wouldn't be looking so carefree about it all, would they? With a soft sigh, he continues: ]
If this isn't a dream, or a nightmare, or a lucid experience, then I'm sure we can all agree that this "phantom reality" they're forcing upon us to believe is nothing short of lies.
If anyone has any information, I would like some light shed on this situation. I may not have much on me, but I can certainly help in some way or another. A jack of all trades, you could call me.
[ And he laughs: ] Or so I would like for you to know me as!
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
The ringing in his ear ended in a click. There came no answer from the phone, only silence. He placed the phone back on the hook, but quickly pulled it back off and onto his ear. Lawrence's hand flicked over the buttons of the phone, but once more it proved to no avail.
"Would you look at that," he murmured to himself, a small, I can't believe this is happening smile on his face. He brushed his long bangs from his face as he attempted to recover his money from the payphone, but that also proved to be a waste of time.
He laughed but it ended in a sigh, "Things just seem to be getting better for me today, aren't they?"
Stuck without a ride or a ear to listen, he placed his hands back in his pocket and began to walk aimlessly. This is what happened when he listened to a necromancer, surely. This was all his fault, not Lawrence's! And yet, as he walked, the young man couldn't help but wonder...
... this was another test, isn't it?
How quaint.
