Good morning, Livejournalers.
It's been a couple of weeks since our (well-deserved) vacation, and I must say, it's good to be back. Well, not entirely. It's good to be back into our well oiled, tried-and-true schedule again, but it's a bit sad at the same time. At least I was ready to come back. It wasn't one of those "Shit, now I need a vacation from my vacation to get used to not being on vacation" sort-of scenarios.
If you haven't seen Star Trek, shame on you.
....I can't let this go. I have to talk about it.
First, thank Christ it's cool to be a Star Trek fan all of a sudden. For too long, many a fine lookin' woman would sneer and snicker at me as soon as they find out all the intimate details I have in my head regarding Klingons, Romulans, Galaxy Class Starships, etc. Now, box office grosses have a new say in what's cool...and it ain't Tom Hanks running through Vatican City.
Now, nitty gritty. To those who have a well-versed idea on Star Trek minutae, don't give me a whole world of shit on problems with storyline, canon, etc. Bleh. The timeline was changed before the title card came on screen. This is all new. This is Biff with the Almanac. This is the Alternate 1985. ***spoiler Alert*** Vulcan is destroyed. Spock's mother is dead. Time to roll with the new. Deal with it.
I was talking to my brother about all of this and I told him, "What a better way to reboot a franchise; to render everything that came before it absolutely moot?" As you may figure (assuming you know my brother at all) he had a difficult time reconciling this film. He walked in expecting an origin story (must admit, so did I) and got anything but. However, I tried to explain to him, how could they recreate a very well-established story without re-telling it? They change everything. This way, they aren't held accountable for any canon whatsoever. And I think they did a great job.
...besides, alternate realities via time travel is well explored territory in Star Trek (TNG, in particular).
Well, life is going well. Keeping busy at work and making a home for ourselves. We may be checking out a few houses today. We'll see. If Allen is available later today.
