This is why the Democrats should start being more assertive against the Republicans

Haven't we gotten past all this Ayn Rand-style nonsense by now? It's like people don't remember the lessons from the Great Depression. If FDR had only authorized programs that were pre-funded, the country may never have made it through the catastrophe. The New Deal may not have pulled us all the way out of the Depression, only the build up to WWII did that (in large part due to the fact that the Republicans blunted the reach of the New Deal and therefore decreased its impact), but it certainly kept many people afloat and the spending was eventually recuperated when the economy improved. That's exactly why the government should spend during a downturn and save during a upturn, somebody has to inject cash into the system when everybody else is keeping theirs close if a downturn is ever to turn around. This is especially true now, when banks are refusing to loan out money and therefore the most important economic activity is basic spending among the poor and middle classes. Money given to the rich will only sit in the vaults of banks that will not put any of it back into the economy, while money given to the poor will be spent immediately at grocery stores and gas stations and will facilitate the creation of new jobs and infrastructure. All of this would be obvious if the Republicans didn't have a strangle-hold over the government, which is a very good reason why the Democrats should start acting like the majority party and put them in their place.
