This is a sad statistic on the state of Christianity in this country

How can Christians support torture under any circumstance? I think that it's quite obvious that Jesus Christ would not have condoned such activities regardless of how necessary they supposedly were. I think that this actually has more to do with politics than religion, although it does show a disturbing trend in this country of people patterning their beliefs on their political rather than religious affiliation. The two groups that were most against torture, mainline Protestants and the unaffiliated, are also the two most liberal of the groups. The evangelicals who are most supportive of torture are also the most conservative group. In the middle, of course, are the swing-voting Catholics. Frankly it disturbs me that only 20% of Catholics are against it. Do they think that Jesus would have been for it, or are they just thinking in a political fashion rather than using their religious convictions? It's a very bad thing that people who aren't religious have a better view on this than those of us who are supposed to follow the teachings of Christ ("Love your enemies" and all), even if they're probably only opposing it because of political motivations.
