Yesterday my department went to lunch at a local Thai Restaurant,
The Old Siam on 8th Street SE just south of Pennsylvania Avenue and across the street from the Starbucks. It's a nice place, and while it looks small when you first enter with just a small amount of tables and a bar you soon find yourself in a spacious back room with plenty of tables and a nice atmosphere. The food was also quite good, reminiscent of Chinese food in some ways. I had the Pad See Eew, which is basically chicken (or pork, or beef, or shrimp) and broccoli with wide rice noodles in soy sauce. The soy sauce was as good as any, a little too strong for my taste but then it's always that way. To drink I had unsweetened iced tea, which was good if not too flavorful. The amount of food didn't seem great when I got it, but it was quite filling and delicious and came at a great price (around 7.50 for the entree, it would have been around 8.50 with shrimp). Ultimately I got out of there for 15 bucks including tax and tip, which is pretty good for lunch in the city. I would definitely recommend them to anybody who is looking for good Thai in the city.
