The Pros and Cons of Charlotte

So Jamie and I are on day two of our housesitting ecursion. I have to admit I feel like I am on vacation even though I am only a short drive away from our apartment. Barbara and Scott have a lovely home, like I mentioned before and it has so many nice places to just chill out, whether it be the back deck or the comfy sitting room. I can't wait to have my cook out tomorrow, I can play at being a grand lady of sorts!

I love my apartment though, don't get me wrong! We live in a neighbourhood called Dilworth, which to me is the equivalent of living on the Eastside of Milwaukee, kinda cool and hip with coffeeshops, cool boutiques, and an awesome Sushi place within walking distance. My neighbor Scott and I go to Rusans on a regular basis for their all you can eat Sushi lunch (9 bucks, thats it!). Across the street we have a discout grocery store called Bi-Lo and a little Laundrymat. Atatched to the same building is an awesome little dive bar called the Comet Grill that serves great veggie burgers and fries and has some of the best bluegrass, rock, and blues bands almost every night. Our apartment building is only four units and fairly old for the area; there isn't a 90 degree angle anywhere; you can actually see the floor slant if you are sitting in the guestroom! All of the apartments are slightly different but ours has hard wood floors and the girl who used to live there painted the walls of the living/dining room a deep velvety red with I have to admit looks nice. I have all of my east indian and asian knicknacks all about and an indian cotton tapestry covering the couch (it used to belong to my cousin who has 5 children so you know why I have to cover it).

One makes the usual concessions for living in the city; it's loud in the evening because of the Comet Grill and also the people at the bus stop almost directly in front of our building. Plus I witnessed a disturbing sight yesterday; a lady was mugged in the parking lot of the grocery store in broad daylight. I ran after the car to get it's plate numbers but I was wearig my contacts and couldn't see as well. I was pretty shook up; the lady was screaming bloody murder and I though it was a kid goofing around at first. I didn't realize something was wrong until I heard the desperation in her voice. I ran across the street barefoot and saw the get-away car rocket away; aparently everybody else thought the same way I did and didnt' come to her rescue until the ordeal was over. It makes me think of all the times I have walked across the street, especially at night, with a day's worth of tip money stashed in my purse. shiver.

Altogether it's a new experience and I don't think I am necessarily in danger, I just have to be a little more aware than I normally would be in Waukesha. It's still a beautiful city with tons of cool places to go, but it's a city nonetheless. I need to be alert because the world needs more Lerts. haha.
