Happy January!

It's been a good day today, starting with sleeping so late it was afternoon before I looked at the clock :) I got really really great news from a friend shortly after that. I'm pretty excited about that, though I haven't actually talked to her about it. ;)

We also ate our traditional New Year's broth fondue-type thing, which was YUMMY this year. I seasoned the broth with lime leaf, black cardamom, ginger, and star anise, and then we cooked sliced sirloin and wild prawns it it. It made a good soup after that! We opened a nice bottle of real Champagne with dessert, which was an assortment of chocolate and strange Japanese snacky cakes.

This year I tried for some Japanese traditions for our New Year's celebration. Yesterday we ate soba noodles for long life, and I made Osekihan, red rice (adzuki beans cooked with sticky rice) garnished with salted sesame seeds. Today's festive red and white was daikon grated together with a red chili pepper. We spooned it on some of the sirloin from the fondue. Have I mentioned how much I love food?

I'm hoping that next weekend we can make it to the mochi-making festival on Bainbridge. Fresh mochi sounds delicious to me, and I was happy to read today that the festival isn't until next Sunday.
