Well, I went to see NEWS last show of the Winter Party Diamond Tour! It was amazing. Unfortunately my report doesn't do it justice, however according to many sources, a DVD of this concert will be made and so its okay (and yes, I saw many cameras at the performance!!)
Just letting you know, this report may not be 100% perfect because a) I was jetlagged after arriving in Japan that same morning, b) I was blinded by the excitement of the concert and c) my Japanese is okay but there is still lots I don't know, and so I probably missed a few things.
Anyway, here goes:
DATE: Monday 12th January 2009
TIME: 17.00
VENUE: Kyocera Osaka Dome
Getting There:
It was extremely easy to get to the dome. My friend took me, but he needn't have, because there were so many girls at the train station carrying the WPD red tote bag, and uchiwas, that I could just follow them and I was fine.
I arrived way earlier than planned, but I was too tired from my flight and travel to Osaka to queue for goods...so I just went inside and found my seat, which was easy too.
The Dome:
Osaka Dome is nice, the roof was really big but once the place filled with people, it didn't seem so huge at all. My seat was in the stands, a little distance away from the front, but really close nonetheless, especially when I considered how big the dome was in retrospect. It was a perfect location because I was close enough to the main stage, and the boys looked in our area heaps!! Because I went to the concert by myself, I felt a tiny bit lonerish...as in, everyone else seemed to be in pairs or groups, and so to ease the feeling I talked to the people next to me anyway. It turned out, they were both fans of Ryo and Yamapi, just like me. In fact, I seemed to be surrounded by Ryo fans, which was comforting. I warned the people next to me, who couldn't believe that I'd come straight from Australia that day to see the concert, that I might cry as soon as I saw NEWS, but they said it was okay and that I shouldn't worry!
The Show:
Well, what can I say? It was brilliant. The boys seemed to really give it their all, performing this show for the last time. Everyone was really genki and full of energy, especially Shige and Tegoshi, as well as Massu. Ryo was tired and worried he would lose his voice, and he didn't talk much, but still gave everything to wave to everyone, smile, run, jump and entertain.
Opening- Intro video directed by Takizawa Hideaki (Tackey & Tsubasa)
the opening video was, as most have said, awesome. it really built up the tension and anticipation for the last concert of the tour, and gosh damn, the boys looked so hot!!
SET LIST
Happy Birthday
the diamond opened, NEWS finally appeared and the crowd went wild. they stayed on the main stage for this song. heaps of people were dancing to the chorus. it was like a late birthday present for me because my birthday was on the 4th jan...so i was very happy to still be in celebratory mode with NEWS singing!!
weeeek
pen-light CRAZINESS! especially in the chorus...people jumping everywhere. at the end of the song, where there is a tiny bit of choreography, shige was right infront of my section!! i got to perve on his butt when he was facing the arena!!
Gan Gan Ganbatte
more jumping. everyone was high tension by this stage!
Hadashi No Cinderella Boy
powerful. the whole "DON!" noise that the boys used to make in the song has now stuck and EVERYONE was yelling it during the verses.
Summer Time
ryo-chan's voice was especially good in the opening verse. i think NEWS were on the middle stage of the arena for this song.
-INTRO-
yamapi did "communication" with the audience, by talking to us and getting us to talk back.
shige- did wordplay with the world diamond....like, Daisuki, Iindesu, Aishiteru....etc
keichan stole tegoshi's whole "daichuki" act, speaking like a little kid and getting us to say "chuki" to him
massu yelled "kitaaaaaaaaa" with lots of energy
ryo said he was tired and he might lose his voice whilst singing (poor thing)
tego didn't know what to do because keichan already did "daichuki" so he decided to repeat it, getting us to say it for every member's name, finishing with "tegonyan chuki" haha (yes, he called himself tegonyan!!)
Why
the billiard game. i still find the costume for this funny...they look so 'oshare' (stylish) on the top, then have funny colored pants on the bottom!! the effect on the screens was cool, it made the billiards and so on look like an old movie. this song was really moody.
Bambina
HOT! i never realised just HOW HOT this song (and the dance) could be, until I saw Ryo and Tego dancing it...moving their hips and so on....words cannot describe, it was sooooo awesome. Ryo did some funny faces during this dance.
Say Hello
the routine with the sticks and chairs was cool. i don't think anyone had any accidents or stuffed up the dance. i never used to like this song, but coupled with the dance, it was actually really cool! yamapi's voice was so not live, because he sounded exactly like the cd version of the song...i guess its because the dance routine was pretty active and they had to move and concentrate alot.
Party Time
i love this song, and the audience was so happy during it. it was the last "party" after all, so everyone was very high tension and jumping around!
Shalala Tamborine (Shige solo)
oh my god...i don't know if i like the song or not, but wow...Shige's voice has really improved! Actually, I shouldn't rant here, but Shige has really improved as a performer, and as a whole package...his looks, his personality, his confidence...he was really a stand out during this show. he was positioned towards the side of the stage and had a really cool image throughout the whole solo.
Ai No Matador (Tegoshi solo)
if i created a dictionary, under the words "hot", "sexy", "gorgeous", "talented" you would find tegoshi and a link to a video of this solo. it was awesome. he performed on the middle stage in the arena, and even though this is usually a group song, he made it work as a solo. i liked the way the music was different to the CD version. tego pulled it off perfectly. if anything, it seemed too easy for him...i would like to see him do something more challenging in the future, so he can show off even more of his talent.
Masuperman (Massu solo)
this was classic massu at his best. there was so much hype about this song, that i was so excited to see it live. massu wore such a funny outfit, and with his short hair he looked kinda dorky but really cute. i was surprised at how cool the song was, and at the funny lyrics. i often forget about massu...but this performance made me remember how awesome he is...his singing, dancing, his energy and the way he really entertains when performing live...he gives so much back to the audience, even in a solo.
I.ZA.NA.I.ZU.KI
to be honest i don't remember much of this, other than that i was happy to see it performed. i think the boys were all standing in different parts of the dome, around the arena, for the verses, and the spot light was on them individually when they were singing.
Taiyou No Namida
everyone in the audience did the hand action. i don't remember much of what the boys did though...there were too many juniors in the way!
Hoshi Wo Mezashite
this was one of those magical moments, where i couldn't believe how a group of 6 guys could bring so many people together...the image of our penlights all reaching and pointing (to the stars....lol) will forever be in my mind. oh and i was crying heaps during this song, because it is so inspirational.
Fiesta
another party song. don't recall the details, sorry.
Easy Come, Easy Go
this was a fun performance, very cheery.
-MC-
*PLEASE NOTE* none of this is in order, its just what i can remember:
The Shige Call: the boys noted how the audience has really warmed to shige lately, and how people seem to randomly call out "shige!" or "SHI-GE!" during songs. For example, in News Nippon, "To North!" "To East" turned into "Shi-ge!" "Shi-ge!"...so...during the MC, we were all just randomly calling out Shige's name and he got really embarrased. It was so funny....like, not just during the start of the MC, but the WHOLE THING...every time someone would say something, or stop talking, the whole of Osaka Dome just yelled "Shige!!!!!"
Seijinshiki the day of the concert was 'Seijin no hi' (coming of age day) so everyone who was 20 in Japan had their coming of age ceremony. the boys said congratulations to everyone (haha i was also 20, but of course didn't do seijinshiki).
Schedules: I think Massu was saying how difficult it can sometimes be for all the NEWS members to get together to do something, because they all have such different schedules and commitments, like dramas, tv shows and so on. But Massu thought it was cool that a whole Dome full of people could have the same schedule on the same day at the same time, and all come together to see NEWS last show!
Tokyo Dome Concerts: The boys talked briefly about Tokyo Dome. They said it was a bit difficult to perform on New Years Day. This was because they firstly had Johnny's Countdown, then all of Johnny's went to do "Hatsumode" (the first shrine/temple visit of the New Year) and then they had to do another concert. Yamapi said that was hard because they'd never had to do that before!
Small Shige: When they stayed at the hotel, Pi, Tego and Kei had dinner together in Shige's room. Then they went to the ofuro together. When the bill came, it was 3man en (30,000 yen) all charged to Shige's room account!!! Pi tried to act like he didn't know anything about that story...haha. Then he said something like "okay, well we'll give the money back to you separately" ...those cheeky boys, poor Shige!! Then everyone was calling Shige "chicche-" (small) ...I didn't completely get it, like, were they trying to say he was being petty for not wanting to pay for everyone's dinner and ofuro?? (ANYONE WHO KNOWS, PLEASE TELL ME!!)
Massu's Vending Machine Trouble: Massu told a rather lengthy story about a problem he had had recently. He was rehearsing his solo with M.A.D (his backdancers) and he decided to buy them all some Amino Supli (i think its a sports/vitamin drink), or "Amino-san" as he cutely called it. Anyway, he went to the vending machine, put the money in, pressed the button and out came Amino-san. So he did it again, to buy the drinks for M.A.D. However, this time when he pressed the button, Ocha (tea) came out instead. So he tried again, and Amino-san came out. The next time, though, Ocha came out. And so on, so forth. Eventually in order to get enough drinks for everyone, he had to try about 8 or 9 times, and ended up having heaps of Ocha bottles too. One of the members said "ah, so thats why all the staff were drinking ocha!" and Massu explained that he gave the ocha to the staff instead! Oh, by the way, Ryo chan was the only one who was listening to this story!!! Poor Massu....
Butais & Dramas: They talked about Massu's new drama RESCUE, and Keichan's butai, CALL. Massu said that he had seen the script for CALL, and that Keichan has lots of lines. Then Massu did a small part from RESCUE. He was acting very seriously, like, he was about to go and save someone, but nobody in the audience, or NEWS could take him seriously, so everyone laughed! He tried it again, but everyone laughed again...poor Massu, he really tried hard to make us want to be saved by him!!
Loud Tegoshi: According to the members, Tegoshi is really loud. Tego himself said that when he goes to karaoke, he has to hold the mic really far away so as not to be too strong when singing. The members thought that was cool. Then Shige did the opposite, and put the mic like right on his lips, pressing against them. It looked like he was licking the mic or about to eat it or something!!
Super Tegoshi: Apparently, all was quiet in the gakuya (dressing room) before the show, until Tegoshi randomly disturbed the peace by jumping up and yelling "SUPERMAN!!!!", imitating Massu's solo. Massu was embarrased that Tegoshi did that to his song. The image of Tego yelling "SUPERMAN!!!!" is sooooo funny!
Rankings on Uchiwas: Apparently, several fans have been writing things like "Shige is my 3rd favourite member" on uchiwas, and Shige thought this was a bit strange. Then, they asked Tegoshi "what would you do if you saw an uchiwa that said Tegoshi is my 6th favorite member?" and Tegoshi said he would say "Sankyuu" (Thankyou), and that he doesnt care about that sort of thing ....aww how cute! (haha, i dare someone to write Tego is my 6th fave member on an uchiwa next time!!)
Stupid Keichan, Massu the child: Oh gosh, Keichan got teased SO MUCH during this MC.....mostly for being stupid. Like, the time he called the "Himalayas" some other name of a mountain. And the saying "kansha kangeki ame arera" he thought was really said "kansha kangeki ame arashi" (which is actually the name of an arashi song). They couldn't believe that he was a Meiji University student, yet could make so many mistakes with common knowledge, like he had an empty head with nothing in it! Keichan felt like he had taken Shige's position as the member who always gets teased. Then, everyone started to say how Keichan was cool and they started talking about Keichan's radio show and how people always ring up and say "Oh I think Keichan is really cool!" and so on. Poor Massu said that when he is a guest on the show, people will ring up and say they think Keichan is cool, then when Keichan asks them "and what do you think of Massu?" they only ever say "oh, he is cute" or "oh, he is like a child"...even though he is in his 20s, they think he is like a teenager.
As you can see, the MC was mostly focused on and done by Kei, Massu and Shige. Tego and Pi were also involved at times, but Ryochan only said like 3 sentences all up. Probably because he was trying to save his voice, and he still had to perform his solo after this.

Wow this was beautiful...They kinda sang it as a closure to the MC. I was very surprised that they performed it, because I thought it was only for Tokyo Dome. It was another very special thing, to be in the audience and hear a song that was created entirely by NEWS themselves. The lyrics in English made me laugh but only because they are just too adorable!! I just thought "GOD I LOVE NEWS" when I heard this song!!
I & I (FIVE)
Ryo introduced FIVE, who have been performing on the tour with them. Ryo got FIVE to play one of their songs, called "I&I" and it was so good!! I was so surprised because I hadn't ever listened to them before. And guess what...Ryo also played with them!!!! I didn't even realise at first, until I saw that he was still standing on stage with his guitar....he was so cool!!! They also mentioned that FIVE was doing a live the next day (the 13th)
Ginza Rhapsody (KoyaPi)
Sensational. The separate dancing with Pi and Kei, the stylish suits, the song itself. They stayed on the main stage and moved down into the audience for this song. Words can't describe how amazing it was...the KoyaPi coupling really worked. Keichan's outfit made me realise just how skinny his legs are...the silver suit pants really highlighted it!
Ai Ai Gasa (Tegomasu)
Sweet, sappy Tegomasu. It was cute, but I don't remember much *dodges flying stuff from Tegomasu fans*
Mafuyu No Nagareboshi
I think they were on the big carts going around the arena near the stands for this. But not sure. Anyway the performance was nice.
Snow Express
Finally! EVERYONE knows this dance, and its probably my favorite, although it was a bit tricky to do in such a small space with uchiwas and penlights flying around everywhere. Tegoshi's voice was so great.
Forever
One of the few songs from "color" (excluding the singles), it was refreshing to hear this song performed.
Cherish
This song will never lose its adorability. The juniors seemed to come out of the woodworks to do the actions with us. And oh....it was SOOOOOO lovely when Ryo got us to sing his line in the middle of the song..."mada shiranai asu no happy monogatari wa bokura de tsukurou".....it was so beautiful. I swear Japanese fans have such lovely voices as a collective. I'll never forget the sound, or the happy look on Ryo's face.
Kibou Yell
More arm crashing, but lots of energy!
TEPPEN
Uplifting.
Murarisuto (KoyaShige + guest appearance by Tego)
OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
BEST SONG OF THE ENTIRE CONCERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, so you all know by now why this was so amazing, but let me tell you from an audience members perspective. It started out with KoyaShige coming on stage asking us if we were ready for more dancing and singing. In similar costumes to Chirarizumu, with a similar dance, they started singing Murarisuto.....it was so catchy and you couldn't help but sing along. Midway through, where the diamond/staircase is on the main stage, the lights pointed and suddenly an extremely cute Joshi Kousei (highschool girl) in a brown blazer, check miniskirt, long white socks, long brown hair and stuffing for breasts appeared. Her face immediately apepared on the big screen and OH MY GOD......we all absolutely WET OURSELVES laughing!!! For who else could pull off such an immensely convincing disguise but Tegonyan. Yes, thats right, Tegoshi, dressed as a cute girl, who KoyaShige wanted to perve on! He danced the dance very enticingly with them, and then all of a sudden "Keichan daichuki"....he KISSED KEICHAN ON THE CHEEK!!!!! Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
OH GOSH it was the funniest thing I have ever ever ever seen in my life!!!! Tego's face was sooooo adorable, and oh gosh his legs....they would make any girl envious....why Tego? why are you so beautiful??? Haha I can't wait to get my hands on photos of this. It has made my year already!
Mola (Yamapi solo)
Whoever said Pi looks just like Akanishi Jin in this song was spot on. The hair, the suit, the sunglasses, the sexy English....but of course, Yamapi being Yamapi, he made it his own...it was sooooooo sexy. The girls down the back of the arena caught his roses and I can assure you, after this performance, yes, we all were "numb"....haha
Ordinary (Ryo solo)
Do I really need to put this into words? I almost don't want to try, because it was that mesmerising and man, I don't even know what to say. As you know, Ryo has been chopping and changing his solo songs all throughout the tour, so I was really holding my breath that he would sing Ordinary for the last show. As soon as I heard the opening though, that was it. I couldn't even sing along, I just stood there, in awe, as Ryo sang and played his guitar with FIVE. It was everything in the world BUT ordinary, a very special performance, and Ryo, despite being tired and having an affected voice, absolutely gave it everything to sing this solo.
Change the World
Unfortunately, due to Ryo having mystified my brain, I remember NOTHING of this. Gomen!
Beach Angel
Really cute. Lots of "OI" shouted by Keichan i think.
Fly Again
This song was kinda sweet, like we all knew that the concert was coming to a close but of course we would see NEWS again. This song is also uplifting and the members looked really joyous and proud whilst singing it.
ENCORE 1-
Smile Maker
Kirameki no Kanata He
weeeek
The first encore was crazy and fun and nobody wanted the party to end, so especially in weeeek, the whole dome was so high tension!! Tego's voice in Kirameki was stunning too!!
Now, I think this part happened between the 2 encores (but I can't be 100% sure)...anyway, after NEWS said goodbye and left the stage, a video appeared on the screen that said " A present for you" (or something to that effect). Then suddenly, a video of NEWS sitting up in the top top rows of Osaka Dome appeared and it showed the boys all signing a signboard, which they then stuck under a seat and told the audience which seat number it was....meaning, someone in the audience got a signboard with EVERYONE's sign on it!! And then, if that wasn't enough, they did it again!!! A second person also got one!!!" Then NEWS actually came onto the stage and got the staff to shine the spotlight on the 2 people who got the signs....it was hard to tell because everyone around them was screaming too!! But wow, what lucky fans!!! And how nice of the boys to think of the people sitting so far away from them, and to give them a gift!
ENCORE 2-
News NIPPON
Yume No Kazu Dake Ai Ga Umareru
Haha this second encore was hilarious!!! Thanks to the Shige call discussion in the MC, the lyrics were SEVERELY altered, so that News Nippon became the new song for teasing Kato-san. Shige's name was inserted everywhere!! Just think of a place in the song that you could say "Shige" and someone would have said it.
And Yume....aww they changed the lyrics and Kei and Pi said "Osaka mata kanarazu kuru yo, yakusoku suru yo" (We'll definitely come to Osaka again, we promise"...of course this brought many "kyaaaaaaa"s from the audience.
FINAL GOODBYE
After Yume no kazu dake, NEWS said goodbye and dissapeared. It was hard to tell if they were gonna come back out or not, but then two staff-san appeared on the main stage and started telling everyone the exit procedure, so it looked as though the concert was over and people started to get out of their seats. They actually spoke for quite a while before, suddenly, NEWS appeared one last time to say goodbye. Yamapi thanked everyone for coming and for the tour, and said a final goodbye to everyone. And that was it!
OTHER THINGS THAT HAPPENED: I can't remember where all these fitted into the show, but they happened:
-Shige waved to me. He was going past in the big cart with the screens on it, and he was waving at our section. He probably noticed my hair or something, and it wasn't an obvious exclusive wave because its not like he was right infront of me, but I defintely saw eye to eye with him!
-Massu waved to me, somewhere during the end of the concert.
-The girl sitting infront of me a few rows down caught Ryo's shirt.
-KoyaPi got naked alot. Like, Koya put on a shirt for a few moments, then would throw it, then put on another one, then throw it. He like totally wiped his sweat on one shirt before throwing it, haha. They were both so sexy.
-The girls sitting on my right didn't have uchiwas, didn't sing or scream, but danced like EVERY dance, just like robots or zombies or something....it was odd!
*I WILL UPDATE THIS PART IF I REMEMBER MORE THINGS*
Leaving the Dome:
Was crazy, but still pretty organised and quick considering the number of people. They let us out section by section, which meant that most of the goods were sold out by the time we all got out. Luckily for me, they still had everything I wanted (Ryo and group photos, T-shirt etc) so I didn't entirely miss out. The show finished around 8.30, but from what I remember, I didn't leave until about 9.30.
My feelings from the show:
Basically I was lucky to even be there, because of the saga pre-Christmas that meant that I couldn't come to Japan during December. It was special to be at the last show, and definitely worth it because of the entertainment factor! My advice though, is that you shouldn't see a show when you are jetlagged if you can help it. I mean, I was just so exhausted afterwards, and so many details totally slipped from memory. Even the KoyaTego kiss...I remember it of course, but not extremely clearly. I just remember laughing so hard!! Anyway, I really liked the whole party/show feeling of the concert, I found it a bit more entertaining than Pacific. I loved the stage design and the costumes too. I hope that the boys can rest now and regain their strength for whatever surprises they have in store for us this year ... *prays for a variety TV show* OSTUKARESAMA DESHITA!!
