update
i have survived the spine surgery and the subsequent hospital stay. got home from the hospital on saturday and have been more-or-less sloth-like since then. i'm permitted to sit for 15 minutes every two hours and to stand in five-minute intervals for no more than 30 minutes a day. were it not for the marvelous array of opiod pain killers and muscle relaxants, i am certain that i would be going crazy. the dogs and cats, on the other hand, are overjoyed with my newfound "lump" status. dogs snuggle during the day. cats snuggle at night (when they aren't running around tormenting each other).
the plan is to return to work in six weeks, although i am going to try to get back to campus after three weeks just for teaching, if i can. in the meantime, visitors are welcome. i'll even let you take my new wheelchair for a spin around the first floor -- whoohoo!
