Life is a kabuki performance.
The staccato taps of the dancers’ geta is the first hesitant contact of steel on steel.
Their flowing yellow and red furisode sleeves become the murky browns and austere greys of an Ishin haori.
The heady beat of the drums pounds a rapid tattoo against her heart; and still she is transfixed by the sight because she will not, nay, cannot leave him.
The golden glow from a hundred flickering lamps is surpassed by the cold beauty of the moonlight falling through the autumn eaves. A melancholy river of silver threads weaving across the ground.
The audience watch dispassionate- their white painted masks firmly in place as the dancers’ bodies stretch taut, every muscle clenched in readiness. Patterns caused by the deft twirling of their fans become etched into the ground as they warily circle each other. As the drumming grows louder, she is rooted on the spot, all will gone.
The crescendo approaches, she watches the painful beauty of the new moon waning across the sky. Her heart gives a painful throb. The flowers showered onto the actors turn into the blood red petals blossoming across her kimono.
The oni who makes the rain bleed sees her for the first time. Her beauty strikes him as ethereal as an iris on a battlefield. Something flickers in the feral depths of his eyes, and for a moment in eternity, his amber orbs soften.

After the days’ adventures and night spent under the open sky in easy companionship, he asked himself if it was truly a rurouni’s kindness to see her safely to Kyoto.
She arrived into his life like a tempest- all brash enthusiasm and stubborn will.
Eyes holding in them a nature so warm and giving. Full of dreams that the very starlight seemed to be mirrored in their depths.
The will to fight. The wish to live. An innocence untarnished by life’s petty struggles.
Eyes that reminded him so much of a girl he had left far behind- whose starlight he had dimmed on a summer night lit by the fireflies.
Maybe, as he glanced at her peacefully sleeping form, maybe his answer lay in protecting her happiness as well.

Author’s Notes: Scribbled this as my classmates lay sleeping and the teacher wandered further off into the realm of the unknown.
Just wondered why Kenshin insisted in accompanying Misao all the way to Kyoto, given that she was probably making him a sitting duck for all of Shishio’s spies.

Away from the grandeur of the silver-eaved shrines, the sonorous ringing of the shoja bells, the manicured gardens in all their quiet magnificence.
Away from the comings-and-goings of gaijin fleet, the hot-headed politics, their equally cold-hearted games.
Away from the lingering metallic stench in every alley, the shadows that made blood-curling screams rent the night, the tides of crimson that washed her doorstep at dawn.
He crouched in the dark corner, gripping his katana even in repose, overwrought senses responding to the faintest brush of wind.
Where the vermillion tints of a maiko’s obi were seen in the colours of the dying sun.
Where the tallest of abodes stood overawed by the jade majesty of the mountains.
Where the days were greeted not with dread, but with open arms, and the nights spent gazing into the charcoal hearth.
She hoped, as she wrapped him in plum scented dreams, that he had at least found a place to rest his soul.
