A question on manners.

So there I was, on a courtroom bench, reading Miss Manners. Because, hell, I read so quickly I'd finished reading every other bit of the paper, and there really isn't much you can do on a courthouse bench.

Anyway, Miss Manners brought up a decent point: why is it we feel nothing at being impolite to those who "accost" us on the street for our change, but yet fret and worry (and sometimes break friendships) over turning down requests in "gift registries" and invitations, which really, at their heart, are nothing more than glorified requests for boons?
