A quote from the prologue of my book.

------------
It wasn't messy. Gun's had stopped being messy years ago. It wasn't even loud. A short buzzing noise was the only audible clue that the pistol had even fired. A brief flash of light, and a superheated stream of air burned a rather large hole right through her father's head. He didn't scream or jerk around like they did in the movies. The wound cauterized even as her mother shot him a second time. A twin hole burned its way through her father's heart. He fell to the ground, a confused expression on his face.
Her mother wasted no time on him. She turned and pointed the gun at Amie. While Amie herself was confused, and a little bit in shock at what was going on, her body had no such problem. She had just watched her father murdered in cold blood, and the weapon that caused it was now pointed at her. The instinct for survival kicked in, and Amie ran.
------------

Good times.
