This is how the world ends.
There is a man who is never quite good enough and a girl that deserved everything she never got.
The man loved the girl incredibly so. He loved her smile more than anything, was at his happiest when he heard her laugh. She was the most important person for him, and he wanted to protect her forever. It was a bit frightening though; the last time he cared for someone this much, he failed to protect them.
But not this time, he would think. This time this one shall keep her safe for sure.
The man tried to, he really did. Even throughout all of the dangers they faced, he was always able to keep her smile.
But in the last danger, the most important one-this is where he fails. Despite knowing where she was, despite being less than a minute away from her, despite absolutely everything, he cannot protect her.
She dies.
He falls down, sees the ground beneath him as a hill of bones. Her blood is still trickling away from her, life leaving the body.
He doesn’t get up.
