There were times when she once knew things, she remembers. They were times where she did not second-guess her every move, did not rely on words that sounded like acid and knew the sound of her own voice.
The memories were hazy, but she could recall making footsteps that were firm and unfaltering, leading rather than following.
But now, she noticed, was much different. She folded quietly into his will without a struggle, stared at her own hands without confidence while he guided them into what should have been familiar patterns. He told her that there was no need to think on her own, that he would tell her anything she ever needed to know, no more and no less.
And as much as she wanted to believe that his words were a lie, his every breath distorted, she had no one to rely on other than him.
Believing in herself, she realized, was what led her to trailing after lies like a lost child, and so she trusted herself no longer.
