The thing with knowing, she thinks, is that it doesn’t help at all.
Even if she can see the dreams in his eyes, the faraway wishes and hopes, it doesn’t stop her from trying to pull him back down to reality, to make him stand with her. She thinks that she’ll be the one to set him straight, the one to stop his dreams until he catches up with life.
It’s not like she wants to hold him back, of course not, she tells herself. It’s just that she doesn’t want to let go, and she doesn’t know if she can keep up.
But she can’t. Maybe things could’ve (would’ve should’ve) been different if she never came, but it doesn’t really matter at this point. She knows that she’s lost, even if she can’t admit it.
And it shouldn’t hurt so much, to know she isn’t winning for once. It shouldn’t seem so painful now, just to see the rain coming or the clouds rolling instead of shining sun. It really shouldn’t.
But it does.
