[4] Hearing the Heart

"Sister, have you still not done enough for them?"

The Goddess of Rebirth turned around, facing her sister, The Goddess of Deathm, after hearing her inquiry. A gentle smile settled upon her lovely, rose lips. She left her hand where it was, enjoying the warmth that it gave.

"Not yet, my sister. Still not yet. There is still much to do for these children."

Her sister's features are normal - passive, calm, tired, hopeless - but they become lively, emotions leaking through her normally timid, sullen voice. "I have seen through the mirror more times than I could count. Nothing can change for these unfortunate children, sister, nothing!"

"Udau," she begins, but stops. How can she tell her of the hopes she placed in the children when it was her sister who had faced there souls to tell them over and over that they had failed? For Udau, perhaps it really was hopeless.

She tries again, "Udau. I know that for you, it is diffucult. I am sorry that I had not realized this sooner and put you through my naive wishes and hopes. But truly, I believe that their fate can be changed. Never have I seen one who is so willing to try."

"But siste - Tula," she says, her eyes and voice becoming tired once again, "you have not had the chance to speak to the girl, Li. Every time I can see her once more, she tells and tells me, 'When will it be enough? When can I rest?' How can we do this to her? I know that this for the boy's sake, but you must consider her position as well."

Tula sighs, knowing already that this is true. She turns her head towards the crytalline structure in front of her. Inside it, there is a young girl sleeping, her face as peaceful as the pure, white snow. Her hand can still feel the warmth emanating from it.

"You are right, Udau. The girl has said that she is tired. But," she pauses, smiling as she thinks of what she has heard, "you have not heard her heart. Oh, sister, it is wonderful. Like the fluttering of a butterfly's wings. Like the ocean waves rolling onto the earth. It is still waiting for a beginning, a story, a life with him."

Here, Udau smiles. It is small, and there is a pain in it, but it is a smile nontheless. "I would still like to think so, my dear sister. However," her eyes slide to the crystalline structure, staring at the girl no doubt, "are you still sure that she can handle what may come? This last like of her has been most..."

"I know," Tula says, ebony eyes darkening with divine fury and rage, "I know."
