'Built originally by William Napier in 1854. Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor, who was given the now overgrown estate in exchange for his land at Telok Blangah, rebuilt the house in 1892. It was designed by J.F.A. McNair, Colonial Engineer, Surveyor-General, and used by Malcolm MacDonald when he was Commissioner-General for Southeast Asia.
It was being used as an Indian military hospital in February 1942 when, despite Red Crosses painted on the roof, it was bombed and set on fire by the Japanese, killing 700 staff and patients.'
