I'd like to define a few terms concerning areas of presence to help me in my discussions of such things.
A culture is one or more people with a setting, past, and traits in common. A subculture is a culture within a larger culture.
An area of presence is the area a given culture has influence over, is connected to.
A setting is the area of presence a given culture lives or exists in.
A margin is the boundary between two areas of influence, or the overlap between two.
A path is the connection a culture leaves when travelling through an area of influence.
A threshold is any place a path crosses a margin.
A crossroad is any place two paths intersect.
