My eyes are shining reading this post, and my brain is whirring.
I love the idea of the Christmas tree as a place to gather. Incidentally, we still have our (fake) tree up, so we're calling it our St. Patrick's tree.
So KM is OK with the silly angels-must-be-sheep idea, which I told him I could develop into something nice. I'm so grateful you brought up angels as carolers, because I needed a secondary image to work in, and the idea of angels as caroling children works beautifully because then third verse can be all about Jesus being both lamb and child, a'la William Blake. BOOM. THANK YOU!
Also, I agree that KJ text is magnificent and I would much rather hold the baby in the tub with my arm whilst splashing out the bathwater rather than throw the whole thing out. And I'm already thinking of several ways the couplet could be made more inclusive, e.g.,
"No other voice so held the world in thrall With words: 'And on earth peace, good will toward all."
