I've known for a long time that the Sisters of Mercy song is not about vampires, but I've always thought that, with a title like Lucretia, words like "reflection", and phrases like "dancing the ghost" , it should be.
So here, courtesy of a train ride and an ipod, are the lyrics to Lucretia (the Vampire Version)
I hear the roar of the meat machine
Two worlds and in between
Hot metal and methedrine
I hear a vampire doll
I hear a vampire doll
I hear the roar of the meat machine
Two worlds and in between
Love lost, fire at will
Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill,
I hear vamp hunters, and
a vampire down
a vampire down
I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed
Get down, get undressed
Get pretty but you and me,
We got the kingdom, we got the key
We are the vampires, now as then,
We don't doubt, we don't take direction,
Lucretia, no reflection, dance the ghost with me
We look hard
We look through
We look hard to see for real
Such things I hear, they don't make sense
I don't see much evidence
I don't feel. I don't feel. I don't feel
A long chain holds up the human thrall
A hard rain of blood on the wall
Once a person
Now it's done...
I hear the roar of the meat machine
Two worlds and in between
Hot metal and methedrine
I hear a vampire doll
We are the vampires, now as then,
We don't doubt, we don't have reflections,
Lucretia, my damnation, dance the ghost with me...
It turns out you don't have to change many words at all to completely change the thrust of the song.
