A question about the Canada Goose

Dec 22, 2010 13:50

Since when were Canada Geese considered vermin??? A friend of mine was talking about the wonderful bird life that live in and around York and the goose revelation came up. I was rather shocked but he was not 100% sure so I am asking my lj lot to see if this is true and why?

There's more detail here. Basically, they congregate in enormous flocks and cause damage to grass and crops, as well as crapping everywhere and apreading diseases.

Oh gosh! I never knew that I was always under the impression that they were supposed to be good for keeping the grass cut and fertilised. But I do see what they mean as I have many times walked about areas where there are large flocks of them and there is a huge amount of guano and many flys and things. Also they can be big bullies too! Thank you honey x

They're culled on campus because while they're great, there are huge numbers of them and it affects the other bird life.

Yes I think they are pretty birds but I didn't realise they had such a bad rep! It's mad how you think one thing for so long and it's completely the opposite lols x

They are vermin to anyone who went to Uni of York - mostly because of their habit of making nests on paths and being extremely protective of them for at least four months of the year. This includes paths outside halls of residence and tutors offices rather than, y'know, out of the way paths. It may just be their nature but it's bloody annoying and they do attack - Grapevine (uni almumni magazine) even ran a cartoon about their dangerousness!
