Hey all, during my uni holiday at the end of June to the end of July, I'm going to go to America/Canada! Woo hoo! So excited!!!!

I'm going to stay with three (3!!) very awesome people, vensre , yue_ix  and crinklysolution , who have very  generously allowed me to mooch free accommodation with them (yaaaaaaay!!)

....So now I'd like to ask something potentially creepy.

Would ( Read more... )

Dude. If you'd like to mosey through the upper Midwest from Michigan over to Minnesota (or vice-versa!), I can offer a futon couch in a cozy apartment in the heart of the Twin Cities!

I have a decently-sized group of local friends who are also fannish, and I also happen to know that revolutionaryjo (and possibly lunate8?) live in the area as well, so perhaps we could even have a podficcing meet-up?

Tourist attractions include the Mall Of America (the largest shopping Mall in the U.S.), and, uh...IDK, the city The Mary Tyler Moore Show was filmed in? The area Marshall from How I Met Your Mother is from? Also, you would actually be in the country for our annual fantasy/sci-fi convention here, CONvergence, which is the largest SF/F con in the upper Midwest, and is generally awesome. It's a lot less "meet actors and get autographs!" than Comic-Con--it's all by-fans-for-fans, and generally has an air of "let's all get together and celebrate our collective geekiness! :DDD" (there is a Slash Panel that both revolutionaryjo and I will be on!) so that's pretty sweet. Besides that, you can go check out Frog town on University avenue. It's not really for tourists, and more for the locals, but the vietnamese, cambodian, hmong and watever restaurants aren't too bad! (I'm a food tourist - I go more for the food experience than the sightseeing experience, therefore, explanations on why you should come visit Minnesota may seem bland and boring if you continue reading) You can also browse around Summit and Grand Avenue, which are also nearby Frog town. These two streets give a good view of downtown Saint Paul, plus there are other nice things on these streets ( ... )

Actually Summit and Grand Ave are my stomping ground--I work on Grand Ave, and used to live right off it (and also grew up in the neighborhood), so I'm totally partial to that area :)

Oh my god, the view of the Weisman from the bridge, JUST before sunset during autumn is possibly one of my favorite views of anything, anywhere, ever. The way the light hits the metal building? SO UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLY PRETTY O.o

(Also, fun fact about the Weisman: it was basically Frank Gehry's test-run for the Guggenheim Museum in Bibao!)

lol I like to walk around that area and just look around cuz of the nice scenery. I like the James J. Hill house - it's freaky-looking (especially when you're looking from the backside of it - I was parking in the ramp for United Hospital and ended up getting a wonderful view of the backside of Summit, but that house was just too dark and auspicious-looking), but the structure is real beautiful.

The Weisman is funky-looking, and doesn't fit with the rest of the University buildings, but it does look beautiful if you come at the right time. And wow, I never knew about that fun fact. :D

Really, Minnesota's a fun place when you think about it. It doesn't have the best tourists attractions, but there are always things you can do to make up for it, especially if you're with a local. LOL

I wouldn't mind! But....seeing as I still live with my mother, going to college, and JUST started a new job....that won't be happening any time. But. If you EVER come back and need a place. Just...send me a message or something. Hopefully by then I will be on my own...or at least maybe just roomates who wouldn't mind. :]

Aw, thank you! That's very sweet of you ♥ I hope to go back to America, unless I hate it --which I think is very unlikely :) And I'll definitely keep you in mind if I do!

You sound pretty full on at the moment, do your best! :D

OKAY ACTUALLY when are you going to be in Quebec and Toronto? I have vacation in mid to late July (that I usually have an event that I volunteer for but more and more am thinking that I...don't want to do it this year) and it *could* be possible for me to be over there for a weekend or something. MAYBE. I DON'T REALLY KNOW. I'd be surprised if the timing works out, but thought I would throw it out there ( ... )

...okay actually, I just looked at train prices, and it would be much cheaper to fly (well, booking now -- it would probably be more expensive later, but not NEARLY as expensive as the train). So, you know, I could probably be there for any time during my vacation, not just on the weekend. :)

I'm in Ottawa, Ontario Canada if that is any help.
Contact me for details and dates - we have a spare room, although the bed is crappy. :(
Last time I looked, SDCC was entirely sold out - I am so tempted to leave my comfort zone and go on an adventure, but it wasn't going to happen I guess.

The fates weren't with us this time, it seems :(

Thank you so much for your generous offer!! If it's alright with you, could I get back to you on this? Someone has offered to potentially put me up in Toronto, which I think is quite close to you? If it pulls through, then maybe we could still meet up while I am in town?? If it falls through, then I will definitely PM you to see if you are still up for it. You're lovely for offering!!

Toronto is close if you've got a half-day to spend travelling.

We have a joke, that Brits measure distance in kilometres, Americans measure distance in miles, and Canadians measure distance in hours. Toronto is about 4.5 hours from Ottawa - we go there for the weekend quite often since distance doesn't scare Canadians - we're huge!!! - but it's not just up the road for dinner or anything.

Keep me in mind! I'm really enjoying making friends in Merlin fandom.

AHAHAHAHA! That's awesome, Australians do that too! When people tell me how far somewhere is in terms of distance, I am like "...I don't know what that means." I think this means I am either bad at visualising or bad at maths (probably both)

4 hours, you say? That's...not quite as close as I would have hoped... :(

Merlin is quite the lovely, friendly fandom! I'm a bit rubbish at it (I'm a horrible]y tardy online correspondent!!!! horrible!!!) but I don't think I've seen anyone around that isn't awesome :) I'll definitely inform you one way or the other! Thank you ♥

As long as you don't mind, I would certainly love to! I will need to get back to you on the exact dates when my flights get finalised, if that's alright with you? But yes!! I would love to crash your sofa bed!! Thank you so much for offering!!!!!! :) :) :)

I don't mind at all. I like fangirls! And I feel that it's part of my duty as a New Yorker to host people on my couch so they can visit my wonderful city without having to pay for an expensive hotel. Just let me know the dates as soon as you've got them figured out.
