I've been thinking up a storm about this since reading your last meta... The theory I'm working on is that Dean started as a normal human, but his time in Hell was the catalyst, the window of opportunity for Hell to use him as the vessel for Lucifer. Ruby's part in this? Help Sam develop his powers...so everyone stays focused on him, so worried about what he might do and become that no one notices Dean. In fact, isn't it an interesting coincidence that Dean was resurrected right near where and when Sam first started to be able to use his demon mojo successfully - suddenly boom, Dean is back. Maybe the angels think they brought Dean back to help stop Sam, but in fact, Dean's ressurection was part of Hell's plan all along? Was Azazel's plan truly to create the Antichrist, or merely to create demon-powered distractions from the real danger?
Sadly, I do suspect keefaq is correct in thinking we're putting more thought into this than Kripke and Co...which sucks, because I think these ideas would make for much more compelling TV than the Jesus!Dean vs. Lucifer!Sam plotline that seems to be developing.
Ooh! I like that idea. but, yeah, I definitely think we have more time to ponder these things than the people who actually work on the show do :) I still trust Kripke to pull some kind of twist toward the end, though.
